Old thread, but just wanted to mention that if you use insecticides, they will kill native pollinators/insects that love purple sand cherry bushes also. People can knock the Japanese beetles off into a bucket of soapy water if they want to avoid this. It's more labor intensive, but SO much better for the environment. We have to start accepting that native plants will have things that eat them, as they evolved together (well, not in the case of Japanese beetles) and try to use tactics that aren't so harmful to the native insects that birds have come to depend on to feed their babies.

Now some plants are less prone to certain issues and others more so, but the only truly disease/pest issueless plant is a plastic one. ;-)

The white in the last photo looks like powdery mildew. I don’t know about the brown. That is a scale infestation, a harmful sucking insect. And lychees have their very own dedicated scale species, although they can be infested with other types as well. There are many online publications addressing how to deal with scale insects but all will point out a need for correct timing as to the spray schedule. Horticultural oils are most often recommended and are an ecologically safe control but may require repeat applications to be fully effective. There are also systemic insecticides that can be used where timing is not so critical but they typically come with a heavier environmental impact as well.
