Australian Native Plants

transplanting natives

Moving and want to bring some of the natives I've planted along with me. Specifically, billardiera, hardenbergia, corea and grevilleas. Most have been planted less than one year ago, so probably aren't that established. Any suggestions or comments about what I should do to move them successfully, or is there no hope?

Hi I have only transplanted Grevillea banksii from your list, and sadly I have lost a few I feel natives are a hard lot to transplant. But if you want to have a go, by all means pot them into large pots and try and get as much soil around the rootball as you can without disturbing too many of the roots, fill with potting mix. But if they are too big and you have to cut the tap root I dont give Grevillea's much hope,

I would leave them in those pots for a while if they survive as disturbing them again too soon would most likely kill them off. Also water them in with seasol it should help a bit my bottle says that is Ok for Natives.

Have to agree with MM on this, at least in relation to Grevillea. Callistemon and most rainforest plants seem to handle root disturbance better than Proteas.

The other tip which I would add to Marion's is that you need to prune about 1/3 of the plant's foliage prior to transplant - the theory is that the plant will put all it's energy into re-establishing its root system in the new location.

By the way...That tree is getting ready to go dormant right now. It is now about 6" above that railing. I plan to cut it off this coming spring and graft to it. Tony, If you're monitoring this thread, I ran out of time to try t-budding this summer. I plan to send you one of the jujubes I started from root cuttings this summer as soon as they go dormant. I'm hoping I can get some more Nikita's Gift scions to try. My plan is to bring a few of the persimmons including the one in the picture above inside to break dormancy as soon as they have had enough chill hours. I'm hoping to be able to W&T graft as soon as I receive the scions. This should avoid the mold problem we had with the NG scions last year.

The toxic algae does not appear to grow in colder water. Most of it seen here is in water in full sun, close to the surface where the sun can raise the water temperature. What we have seen here is if the water has higher than normal levels of Phosphorus and Nitrites and a lot of sunlight the toxic algae will grow, but if the water is shaded with little sunlight there will be no growth. Whether algae growing near a mineral spring would have more nutrients depends on too many other factors to say for sure.

Wait until fall if possible. Most of the roots are in the top 6 to 12 inches of soil, so go wide and shallow when digging. I once moved one that was only waist high and the roots extended to a 12' diameter so I root pruned in the spring, to a diameter of 6' and moved it in the fall. To root prune, dig a trench around the tree to a depth of 12" and fill the trench with compost. then fertilize with a fertilizer with a high middle # like triple super phosphate 0-48-0, to promote root growth. By fall the trench will be full of small feeder roots and you will have dictated the size of the rootball.

Protect them from rabbits over winter, or you will have no hemlocks in the spring. Hemlocks grow natually in full shade and don't need much supplemental care, they don't like drought so water if next summer is dry. Here is a link that might be useful: Hemlock Care

Well, I've done it. After 3 days, the billardieras and hardenbergias look fine, as does the grevillia (it wasn't well established at the old garden). The tall coreas (reflexa and some yellow WA one) are looking good... but the dusky bells corea (low growing dark green leaves) are looking quite shocked and I'm not expecting much from them at this stage. I don't know if it's too late to prune now, but I'll try the fertiliser for sure. Thanks guys!
