Am I the only one?

Hazelnuts, walnuts, pistachios, chestnuts, almonds...

I've got the last two, but I definitely need hazelnuts and walnuts. And why not pistachios?

Any varieties that you particularly like? Any other nuts that I 'need'? Remember I am in a climate with light frosts in winter. :)

you are so lucky with the climate you have over there...chill factor and heat in summer...go for the pistachios, I will be extremely jealous. I have the hazelnut group of 10 plants...Pollination seems to be the problem here...I got my hazels from Bob Magnus who sells 10 hazelnuts which contain 5-6 different varieties, which ensures pollination...Almonds you need two plants, but you can get some self pollinators...I think it is Chelston?

I say go the lot!!! I'm nibbling on some as i type! I'd love to know more about nut trees though. Everyone tells me the trees grow huge, especially walnuts - is this true?? And others tell me that most nut trees can take between 7-15 years to 'fruit'! I think i would be too impatient for that? But I say go for it Spatzbear - what a treat!! : )

Helen, I have just ordered Hazelnut bushes from Bob Magnus and looking forward to their arrival! Do you grow any other nut trees, and can you help with my queries for the Tassie climate?

Some things to consider: the vast majority of flowering bulbs prefer a lot of sun - areas that are most suitable for growing hostas (shade lovers) will not be the best for flowering bulbs. Also, most summer flowering bulbs derive from semi-tropical or tropical locales and are not winter hardy left in the ground in most areas of the country. Digging them up each season and storing over the winter and replanting each spring is a lot of work :-) Lilies tend to be the exception and would be a nice addition. Spring flowering bulbs are hardier and can be left in place but they also like full sun and will have messy foliage after bloom that must be left in place. For a long season of color, I'd consider some hardy perennials before choosing bulbs. Things like black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia), cone flowers, daylilies, sedums, yarrow, salvias and malva are very low maintenance as perennials go and pretty drought tolerant as well, reducing watering needs. Others to consider are oriental poppies, iris and peonies. And ornamental grasses. And Al makes a good point regarding foliage - any flowering perennial (or bulb, for that matter) will have a limited bloom season, so relying on plants that offer great foliage effect will extend the season and provide interest even into winter.

double ditto... your sister has obviously failed at the most basic responsibility of a parent- which is to raise a child capable of surviving on their own. why you are rewarding his rudeness and slovenly habits is beyond me- and how you think that 'taking care of him' this way is in any way loving, or good for him- I don't get. all you're doing it teaching him that the cleaning faeries will do for him, and that he is immune to the laws that the rest of us live by. I'm sorry you have a loser like that as a next door neighbor- but you should really start looking on him as a neighbor, not a family member, since he's hardly treating you with the respect that an aunt would expect in MY family! us kids are expected to fetch and carry (and mow lawns, and walk dogs, and run errands, and shovel snow) for our elders, not the other way around!

I read that it is legal to download as long as I am not selling it, playing the song at any place where you would normally pay someone to play a song- such as a wedding, big party... It is confusing... Nope - your not getting legal downloads. If a song has a copyright (and nearly all do) you cannot download, even for personal use. Tally- I DID buy Limewire- $35 for a year. You paid $35 for the LimeWire Pro SOFTWARE - that does not make any music downloads legal - it is confusing - but you actually got ripped off if you think you are safe from prosecution by downloading from them. Their own site states that - although you really have to search for it. When you sign up with LimeWire - one of the things you agree too (if you actually read EVERYTHING - is that you will not download copyright material. This is from Limewire: "LimeWire Users The program distributed by Lime Wire, "LimeWire BASIC and LimeWire PRO", is legal software, but like many legal things, it is possible to use it in illegal ways. Specifically, it is illegal for you to use LimeWire to share, distribute or download (all of which we call sharing) copyrighted files without permission, or to share unlawful pornographic materials. I also bought a couple iTunes, but now can't download them to the mp3- even the computer tech can't- so maybe iTunes isn't the place to buy songs from?? iTunes works with iPods - Apples to Apples if you have a different type of MP3 player - you need to use somewhere else for your downloads. WalMart.com has lots, and there are many other legal sites. If you choose to use an illegal d/l site - that is your choice, but you should be correctly informed going into it. Don't fool yourself into thinking LimeWire, KaZaa or others like that are legal. Read EVERYTHING when you are getting music from a site. It is a $$ fine when you get caught - several thousand dollars.

Spatz, have you ever been to the "Food Forest" in Gawler, I just remembered them, they grow all manner of fruit and nuts including a pistachio plantation. I went there as part of the open garden scheme many years ago, but they run regular tours and workshops as well. My sister went there more recently and says that it was a really interesting visit.

What about Macadamia nuts?, Grow easily in SA. Then there's pine nuts, an odd plant called the Peanut tree, (Taste like peanuts as the name suggests), Bunya pine, if you are happy to be very patient for your nuts:),Malabar chestnut if you have a slightly protected spot for its first couple of years.

I have only lived in Tassie for 5 years and my block of land for 2 years, so I am a bit of a novice, but will help you as much as I can..I have the 10 hazelnuts and I just purchased a Wilson Walnut, but found out from a article posted by Spatz that I need another for a good crop. Luckily I have a couple of acres to play with. I want to get some almond trees and there is an andean tree that is related to the Macadamia that grows here in Tas. The lady that grows them isnt back at the Salamanca Markets until August, so I will have to wait until then to get a couple. I killed my first one with too much water. However, all nut trees take a while to fruit.

Hey Spatz,
Bob Magnus deals in the Heritage varieties and they are obviously proving popular! Good luck with ordering from Bob this year! We placed an order a month ago and i rang two days ago to find out if he recieved it. His answer was gorgeous! Bob: "I got over 200 orders this year and have completed 20 of those orders so far - hopefully yours won't be too far down the line!"

He has run out of Pears already and probably more varieties by now!

aaarghhhh, I had a pear in my order to Bob! I need it as a pollinator for my other pear! When do people put their orders in? I usually put mine in in the middle of may and thought I would be getting my fruit trees any moment now! At least I know I will be waiting!

Hi Helen,
Apparently Bob is filling the first orders from people who missed out last year!!! So put your order in now for next year!!!! We put our order in as soon as we received his catalogue in the mail (thinking how organised and smart we were!), but alas, he only laughed and said that we were 'late'! Oh well, good for Bob - bad for us!

Macademia nuts sound good, too. Thanks. Must look up the other trees mentioned.

No Pecan, Mudlark. I think. Read it up in Louis Glowinski's book. It's far too demanding where water is concerned. And a picky pollinator. I am NOT feeding anything heaps of water if it does not give something back in return.

I want to go nuts!
