Weeping Japanese Maple - trunk splitting

Can anyone help, my Weeping Maple's trunk is splitting (about 8 inches on one side only), how can I save it. It looks very healthy (obviously not!)could this be caused from to much or not enough water (unlikely), it is around 8 years old. It started last year, will it fix itself, should I tape it somehow, should I put something in the split to protect it from !!!. Please all Jap Maple gurus - help me.

I had a similar problem in some upper branches and decided it was dieback. The outer layers kept reducing and yet to cut it out would have ruined the shape. I had to just let it run its course. At least the upper branches hid it.

Why don't you contact "Flemings" (Monbulk/Silvan) as I know they wholesale a lot of weeping maples and perhaps you may get some better advice than the local nursery. You need some specialist advice. Good luck. I would be interested to hear any solutions. The last time I posted a message about Jap weeping maples I had only one response. This forum seems a bit slower than some of the others I think.

Is it only the bark that has split, or is the wood underneath splitting as well? Has the bark seperated from the wood, or pulling back from the split?

It could be frost damage.

It will be too late now, but if you wrap the bark with grafting tape, cover with hessian or cloth and keep moist the bark may heel itself. If left too long it peels back on itself, it will eventually stop, but will leave a large scar.

All you can do now is just wait and see.

will try for pix tomorrow --in meantime, just heavy snows, which we've had before. no temp records. tree was planted to overhang small pond that was installed before we bought house. pond was cemented in, but cement developed several cracks. had pond refitted last year, so that about 1/3 of root system is no longer getting water -- getting plenty of water from remaining 2/3. plenty of leaves on branches and twigs overhanging pond. other change in microclimate was large branch from overhanging tree fell last winter. red maple now getting more sun.

Japanese maples are prone to fungus problems that cause them to die back. They also tend to be rated hardy to Zone 6, maybe recent hard winter(s) back there are damaging yours.

Bolting or cabling is very common to salvage split branching or to prevent against further damage. There were multiple discussions on this topic here a couple of seasons ago after a heavy, wet snowfall and a lot of damage to weeping laceleaf maples (which tend to accumulate and hold snow in their branches). Do a Google search on "tree bolting or cabling" - you'll find various resources and videos showing you precisely how to do so. Contrary to what many think, if a split branch or fork is not immediately addressed (within 24-36 hours), the tree begins to compartmentalize amd seal off the injury and if that happens, the split will never grow back together and will remain a structural weakness and liable to further damage. Not all cultivars of Japanese maples will have a similar growth habit. And it also depends on where the graft is located. Low branching is a common characteristic of the vast majority of JM cultivars. If you want a tree with a clear straight trunk, look for cultivars that naturally assume that habit or purchase one with that potential that will not need pruning or staking to achieve. 'Olson's Frosted Strawberry' will never get to be a large tree (considered a dwarf, reaching about 6-8' at maturity) and has a semi-weeping habit. A single, clear trunk is not likely something that is easily trainable. Nor necessarily desirable. One of the most appealing features of JM's is their very sculptural and often asymmetrical growth habit. A straight, clear trunk is the exception, not the norm, and is often out of character with the tree and its typical growth habit. As to Japanese maples "pre-shaped by the nurseries", I know of no reputable commercial grower of JM's that follows this practice, although many do stake their young trees to develop a more vertical growth habit. But just as many only stake the trees to prevent breakage and other damage during transport and shipping.
