What are people planting now ?

Have been on a plant buying frenzy (what's new?) and have planted the following -

blue smoke bush

grevillea nudiflora

prostrate woolly bush

yellow calothamnus called Starlight

20 lillypillies "elegance"

14 westringias "Wynabie Gem"

and sundry other more common natives and exotics.

My banksia hookerianas are flowering - extremely excited - and my banksia littoralis has got some promising new growth.

Hope everyone elses gardens are jumping about.

You have been busy, I got my three free trees from the council so I have planted
Xanhostemon chrysanthus ( Golden Penda)
Brakhousia myrtifolia ( Grey myrtle)
Stenocarpus ( Firewheel tree)
I have also grown over the Summer from seed lots of Caesalpinca ferrea trees (Leopardwood tree)I have planted three in my garden this week and the rest I have given away.

Next week I will be getting some flowering gum tree seedlings so no more after that as the garden is full.

Hi Aggie

My garden is jumping about. We have had a lot of rain, here on the Central Coast, and the garden has grown so much over the summer.

Today I was removing the dreaded Blackberry from amoungst my Grevillea "Poorinda Royal Mantle". A wonderful dense ground cover, that has covered a large bank in my garden.

I gave up, after the ants beseiged me and out of the corner of my eye I spied a green tree snake hanging about in a nearby fern! I know they dont hurt buy it is a snake!!

Blackberry is a menace, so spikey and invasive.

BTW...I hope you know I'm just joking....although I do love blueberries. You are like the family farmer's market! Good luck getting the grandkids to help with plowing etc. All the kids I see couldn't be less interested in gardening or growing anything. I find that sad and somewhat disturbing. Anyway, sounds like you had a great visit with your family. That 6 year old will remember that for a long time. I know things like that when I was a kid stick in my mind to this day...very vividly too.

What to plant now, what to plant in the fall?

The advantages of planting most perennials, shrubs, and trees (in our zone) in early to mid fall is slight compared to planting them in early to mid spring. In colder climates, it's often best to wait until spring to plant. If you are planting a fast growing or top-heavy deciduous tree or shrub, fall might give the roots time to get more well established before the plant experiences wind that could push the tree, with a smaller root ball, over. Basically, plant at whichever time is more convient to YOU. If you plant them correctly and water them until they get established either time (in this climate zone) would work just great.

I have five 6x6 raised beds that will be filled with all the usual kitchen garden suspects (beans, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, cucumber, eggplant, lettuce, melon, onion, peas, peppers, radish, summer squash, and salad tomato). Nothing too exciting in this group but I will be trying Zlata radish and Rosa Bianca eggplant for the first time. The salad tomatoes will be 9 different heirloom varieties - Stupice, Sioux, Brandywine, Break 'O Day, Persimmon, Aunt Ruby's German, Rose de Berne, Black Krim and White Wonder. Three informal raised beds in the kitchen garden area will be occupied by 3 varieties of cherry tomatoes, herbs (Basil, Catnip, Chamomile, Chive, Cilantro, Dill, Lavender, Marjoram, Mint, Oregano, Parsley, Rosemary, Sage, Stevia, Summer Savory, Thyme, and Tarragon) and annual flowers (cosmos, gazania, geranium, impatiens, marigold, moss rose, petunia, and zinnia). I also have a community garden plot which will be used to plant a three sisters patch of corn, dried beans and winter squash as well as beet, cabbage, potato, onion, paste tomato, pea, bean, pumpkin, watermelon, and turnip. My 4 landscaped garden areas have a few tulips, crocus and daffodils and a bunch of native perennial flowers, edible berries (blueberry, chokeberry, cranberry, currant, gooseberry, juneberry, raspberry and strawberry) and 7 semi-dwarf fruit trees (2 apple, 3 cherry, and 2 plum). Open spaces in these gardens will be filled by the annual flowers I don't squeeze into the kitchen garden area. Happy gardening! wd

DIlly-Dally have you ever gone into court and gotten a judgment against someone? Do you have any idea how difficult it is to collect on a judgment? Remember the tenant has moved out. Before you can collect you have to find them. You have to either find a bank account or find out where they work. Then you have to file for garnishment. If it's a bank account you have to refile each time you go into the account to garnish funds. Most people just change banks leading the collector on a merry chase. If they have moved out of state you can just forget the whole thing. You may have "won" in the courtroom but all you've actually done is paid a lot of filing fees and spent a bit of time for the "paper". It's not like on Judge Judy. LOL Yes there are statutes as to how much deposit a landlord can require for a pet. Actually in California their is no "pet deposit" In California under civil code section 1950.5 "pet deposits" are considered as part of the security deposit. The landlord can only collect a security deposit with the following maximums: Unfurnished rental unit: The total amount that the landlord requires as security cannot be more than the amount of two months' rent. If you have a waterbed, the total amount allowed as security can be up to two and-a-half times the monthly rent. Furnished rental unit: The total amount that the landlord requires as security cannot be more than the amount of three months' rent. If you have a waterbed, the total amount allowed as security can be up to three-and-a-half times the monthly rent. Let me tell you. It can eat up a lot more than two months rent to repair the damage one peeing cat can do. Plus the landlord is out of the rental income during the extra time it takes to get the property ready for the next tenant.

Hi Agnes. You are brave to plant now!! I am holding off until we get some rain - if it ever comes. What type of soil do you have? I have a philosophy of "3 strikes and you're out" - thus with Grev.nudiflora and I so love the plant. The Calothamnus sounds good - will give it a try. Cheers, Laurie

Mistymorn - the garden can never be full ;)

Popi - yikes, a snake !! I think I would have screamed and ran !

Laurie - I am down near Burswood - near the river. Cruddy soil really - water repellant, poor quality. Am going up the Hills to the native nursery this weekend - one of my correas packed it in and I am buying a replacement. Didn't intend to plant during a 35 + heatwave - boy, was the 42 degree day a stinker !! I was thinking that as it was theoretically now autumn it was good to go. Anyway, my starter tubes are doing ok. Peversely, they seem to be responding to the heat and actually have grown over the last couple of days.

The calothamnus is gorgeous and from Lulfitz.

I read Agne's list of plantings (23 March) and noticed Calothamnus Starlight - love this plant but alas I need a couple of replacement plants>
Problem is that I am unable to access them around here - please tell me where I can buy them (expect I may need to pay for delivery)

You're the first visitor to this page since 2005, kerry55! I'm not too sure about the varietal name 'Starlight' but I've seen Calothamnus at many nurseries be they specialists in natives or not. You don't say whereabouts in NSW you are so not much use suggesting any particular nursery, so maybe a ring around your local ones might be fruitful.
