What types of plants are ready to be planted out now in z5

I was just wondering with all of the talk about planting now instead of waiting what types of plants would be safe to plant out now. I know that the tender annuals are out of the question if they have germinated by now. And at what stage do you plant out now. I have some like a lupine that has clearly reached the true leaf stage but only one of the plants in the container is at this stage the rest are not in fact I am not sure all of the seeds have poped up yet and I don't want to chance them. It goes this way in most of my jugs with the exception of the purple candy tuft. That jug is packed full of seedlings and they are about 1 1/2 inches tall now. Thanks

Hardy perennials and hardy annuals can be planted out now. I try to plant after they have one or two sets of true leaves. That doesn't always happen (only so many hours in a day, I do it as I find time). If allowed to get too large in the jug I find them harder to handle.

If you cut into hunks and plant those, more seeds might germinate in the beds. Also dump any extra potting mix from the jug in the area, a few more might sprout there.

Everything frozen solid around here again this morning (22F). As for my sprouted jugs, no true leaves in any of them. Actually, none of them have budged since they sprouted so I'm in no hurry to do anything with them. And, unfortunately, I do not currently have any crowding issues, so me and the babies are jus' chillin' right now. Maybe they'll start leafing when it gets warmer near the end of the month...

Indoors about a month ago I sowed Mary Washington asparagus in cells, have about 18 seedlings (ca. 75-80% germination), about 6 to 9 inches tall. Couple pots of parsley and thyme were sown at same time and are couple inches tall. Bought one of those plastic clam shells of organic rosemary for $2.49 and stripped the stems apart and rooted in water. Now I have 9 four-inch baby plants, sure beats starting rosemary from seed and waiting forever. Sowed hot and sweet peppers in cells two days ago, also three varieties of tomatoes (some tom seed was nine years old, but it sprouted OK last year...!) Next on the indoor agenda, maybe: chard, kale, scallions, leeks, bok choy. Also maybe lettuces and spinach. Outdoor garden is covered with a foot of frozen compacted snow here in mid-Hudson Valley, so my unheated enclosed porch will have to be a surrogate for the cool-weather crops.

They do say to add a week or two to the DTM numbers when planting in the Fall. If you think about it, the days just get shorter and shorter, regardless of temperatures. I put some snow peas in last week, only to have them nibbled down by a vole. I have them covered now. Earlier in the year, when it started to heat up, I read that putting a shade cloth over my lettuce should effectively reduce the temperature by 10 degrees. I have thought this might be what I do if the peas regrow and if the temps shoot up again. It has been really pleasant here for the past few days, but I am told it will probably get hot again in August. I have the shade cloth ready.

Sunflowers want out NOW...Z5ers- help!

My sunnies are getting big too. I hesitate to plant them out yet partly because the little critters eat them. More than half of them were eaten last year. I want my sunflowers to get bigger to stand a fighting chance against the critters, plus I don't want to cover them if we get a frost. Mine are 2-3 inches tall right now. I'm also trapping the critters because I have sooooo many (moles, voles, and shrews). I was raking the yard today and found about 10 new holes, never mind all the holes I already knew about in my flower beds. I applied castor oil too, but the moles are still busy digging. Anyway, maybe you could pot them up first? or just plant them out and hope for the best.

Scot, I'm doing the same thing. I love my 'Meader' American persimmon, but the fruits from Americans are really very different from the Asian -- like the difference between a date and a mango in texture and culinary use, IMO. I'm going to protect mine the way Artictropic protects his awesome palm trees in the mountains of North Utah -- foamboard structures with a few cfc lights for warmth. Go to the Palms and Cycads forum and look at his pictures on some of his numerous posts. Truly awesome to see how well he overwinters palms in a Zone 4 climate with lows as cold as -45 degrees. The only concern I have doing this is tht I've always had a LOT of problems with voles getting into my structures and under mulch and destroying things, so I have to do a lot of vole proofing as well -- right now, the plants are in pots, but I guess I'm going to plant them into a cylinder of hardware cloth, and then cover the soil and trunks with the same. Next year, though, I'm going to overwinter them in pots in the barely heated garage one more year to get some size on them before throwing them to the mercy (or lack thereof) of winter in Michigan.

I am adept by now in pulling out few seedlings that germinated and planting them out while leaving rest alone to grow. With lupins they have long tap root. My action is- very gently with barbecue stick I disturb soil around seedlings slowly pulling them up only when I do not feel any resistance.
If one has light approach it is not harmful to the plant. I also usually have all my seeds on top of the media so I can see what germinated and what now.
I would say all hardy seedlings can go out now if they big enough for you handle. My area zip code is listed as above freezing temps for next 10 days, looks like most nights are in 40- good enough for me. I won't chance coleus until after mid May but begonias and torenias will go after May 1.

I also have many jugs that have a "leader" - one or two sprouts at true leaves stage, others just germinating. At this point I am leaving the whole "family" together in the container for a bit, until I get more sprouts at a mature phase for planting out. I'll watch them to make sure the leaders are not getting out of hand (roots coming out the bottom the container, etc. I've also got this going on with lupine, just like you.
