Indian mynah birds

Is there a way to get rid of these pests - other than shooting? Not allowed to do that in town! They have destroyed all the fruit on my trees and are now into the tomatoes. Not even the parrots beat them this year!

I didn't think we had Indian mynah birds in SA? I hope they're not on their way here!

Of all the introduced birds pests, indian mynahs are the absolute worst. Even worse than filthy starlings and shitty sparrows and pigeons. Mynahs will go out of their way to displace native birds, chasing them out of their environment and stealing their nests. They have taken over the whole east coast, right up to the tropical rainforests of far north Queensland. Kill them on sight. Give no mercy.

Marda, That poem instantly reminded me of a cartoon that the Chicago Tribune ran every year about this time. LOL! You gals are the best! OA...the image was removed when I looked at your "spring cloche" post...but PM said it was in the album...this must be the pic below: It's adorable! But I could hear your scream!...may have echoed it myself today! Especially when I had to use those long "pincher" old people pick-up tools...to pick up 3 ears that dropped off behind the little corner dresser on the porch...as the lamp tipped & the cobwebs flew! And that was only my FIRST try at hanging it! I hung it 3 diff times! I swear it was more like "popcorn" than "Indian Corn!" LOL! Thanks punk, luvs & party...I should have taken a pic of mine...but there was no way as corn kept falling off! Thanks for the suggestions...I think wire or fishing line AND glue is probably the answer. But great minds think alike luvs & party, cause DH made the same suggestions when he came in the house & saw my dilemma...cardboard and/or plywood and/or screws or nails. Well, I'll see what happens in a day or two...almost was ready to "shell it all" & put the kernals in a apothecary! LOL! TFcommenting! Jeanne S.

Parker, Yes ... certainly over doing anything and being way out of balance can do more harm than good. I wonder what's in that lychee that can become an overdose ... It is certainly something to be thinking about. That said, I wonder if that could be due to some food poisoning caused by some kind of virus or bacteria? A lot of people unconsciously pick up dropped fruit from the ground and start popping them into their mouth. Here, in my yard, we have raccoons, rats, opossums, snakes and who knows what. I heard their their droppings are highly contagious that can cause serious illness or even death. So, I'm thinking these kids being kids ... are obviously oblivious to the dangers lurking around with unwashed/contaminated fruit. Even if the fruit are picked from the trees, birds' dropping cannot be a good thing to ingest too. I heard of a case where a person bought a canned soda from a store and drank it. He died from it and they found out that the lid had residue from some rat's pee on it. May be a freak case, but ... contamination caused by pests and wild life cannot be underestimated. Anyway, just guessing here ... But ... yeah .. definitely a sad case. Thanks for sharing the story and your thoughts.

Because of various bird pests, mynahs, starlings and blackbirds particularly we now cover all our vegie patch with the anti-bird netting. If any of them happen to find a way in under it they will not be able to do it again.
We have found also that it keeps cats and some of the other pests away from the plants, eg. white cabbage moth.

They come in and eat our dogs biscuits and paint the concrete area near his bowl, and walk all over our awning waking us up. I HATE them, I tried putting a seperate bowl of dog biscuits on our roof with rat bait mixed in. The next day when I checked it they had eaten everything except the rat bait. They laugh at us too when they make that stupid noise.

There is a novel by Bryce Courtney (Mathew Flinders Cat) in how he gets rid of Indian Mynah's
Make friends with them and then proceed to place one rat poison pellet in a small pieces of bread and feed them daily and daily and daily.

HELP please! We're being invaded by Indian Mynas - is there somewhere in SA that is monitoring this invasion and cna offer advice please? I'd like to get a trap... that are trying to drive away parrots and other birds. Any suggestions welcome!

In the Eastern suburbs of Adelaide I see lots of mynahs - but it turned out they are native birds (noisy mynahs), not Indian mynahs. Although these birds too seem quite aggressive, I do not know whether they share all the other reported bad behaviour of Indian mynahs, so it may be good to bear in mind if you are considering any action against them. The ANU website below has pictures of both the native and introduced birds.
