I have a feeling many of the quince varieties being grown in Latin America might be more edible raw than the standard European varieties common in America—not that quince is common, very few people in the U.S.A. grow it anymore. The best varieties I am aware of for eating raw are 'Aromatnaya' and, in warmer climates, 'Karp's Sweet'. Orange Quince is tolerably edible raw, but not especially good—it is not astringent. When eating raw, quince is best enjoyed very thinly sliced. In Latin America it is common to eat it with sweet chili vinegar sauce and crushed peanuts. Quince, before it's been cooked, is not a fruit that's going to be appreciated by everyone. The texture is very dense, and most varieties are astringent when uncooked and hard to chew down very much of it. Cooked, quince changes into a whole different culinary food. Excellent in Apple pies, deserts, spreads, preserves, and even stews. Make sure you're using Cydonia oblonga (fruiting quince) because the small fruits that may appear on ornamental Asian quince (which is a whole different species) do not taste very good.

Hi, Konrad. I will try to post a picture. As technically challenged as I am, it may take some time! Thank you for your advice. I did cut off about 2.5 feet, and am watching it carefully. I am a little ticked, because the nursery promised "well-rooted" branched out trees. They had promised that their trees would fruit within the first season, which is why I bought from them. I love quince, am from the Med. Region and I was looking forward to juicy, lovely quince! LOLA...But, I am going to take a picture and upload it which may also clarify it a little better.

I planted my Quince trees last year in Feb (lasts years weather was amazing for zone 5!) and got blooms in May (no fruit, but i would have pruned it off it if tried to). This year we have been much colder (I am expecting us to be about a month behind last year) so a later bloom should be expected. Also, for me at least, the trees leaf out before they flower. It was my jumbo Quince that flowered, as i am sure there are also variations for bloom time depending on what kind of quince you have. I have a planting of 1 Jumbo, 1 pineapple, and 1 orange quince all in one hole.

If there's not a lot of room you would choose Chaenomeles japonica. However if fruit is the priority then you would find a place for Cydonia oblonga. Also I wouldn't plant something for fruit near a busy road because of the pollution.
