Tomato Suggestions?

I notice that you lot are already sowing tomato seeds and I don't want to be left behind...(Bet Ray's not yet, in arctic Armidale!)

Anyone have a recommendation for heat tolerant OP varieties with great taste and good bearing? We get weeks of 40C+ temps through summer here, and my vege patch is totally exposed, no-where for 'em to hide in the heat of the day.

Am looking at Eden's offerings at the moment, but suggestions to narrow down the choice would be welcome and appreciated!

(Currently eating carrots, broad beans, broccoli, turnips, lettuces, brussells sprouts...can't wait for summer veges!)

I live in Karratha - (The Pilbara) North West of Western Australia. We grow out tomatos in the winter as it is too hot to grow them in summer. We also have prolonged temperatures over 45degrees in the summer. This year I am growing Tropic, Ponderosa Red which are heat tolerant and available at Eden Seeds which are doing well. Eden also has Potato Leaf, MoneyMaker, DayDream, Scorpio also try Mana Lucie. One tip that I read in the new Yates Garden Guide was to use Condy's Crystals (Permanganate of Potash available at chemist's) on your tomatos. Place a few grains of Condy's Crystals in a watering can to colour it pale pink. It is an anti-miticide and fungicide. I use it once a week even when the seeds are emerging. I have not had any grubs this year. A friend who lives 2 houses away said her tomatos have alot of grubs. I suggest not growing tomatos in the hottest part of the summer as I dont think any tomatos will survive. You could try growing them in containers that could be moved into a shaded area in the really hots months. I saw in a book where a guy from Cairns grew his tomatos in 44 gallon drums and moved them in summer to a more shaded area. Hope this might help.

Have you tried Eva Purple Ball or Florida Pink? Those are two true-breeding tomato varieties that have done very well for me in my Gulf Coast garden. Most varities I grow (both hybrid and true-breeding) struggle with the heat, high humidity and foliage diseases, but these two varieties do very well here. Eva Purple Ball makes tennis ball size fruit, while Florida Pink makes huge +1 lb beefsteaks. Florida Pink is incredibly productive for such a large variety. Both varieties are crack resistant. If you grow them, be sure to give them a tall cage (8 ft or taller) with strong support, because they both make huge plants with very heavy foliage.

It would help to know where you garden. If I set out tomatoes by February like yummykatz, I'd have nothing but freeze burned plants. lol Tomato pollen dies at temps over 95 degrees and your plants will not set fruit. They also need a bit of wind or movement to help that pollenation process. My granny used to whack at her large healthy plants with a length of garden hose or short stick. I think she thought she was disciplining them, but in reality she was helping that pollen move around. In my Ft. Worth area garden, I plant Celebrity and Roma tomatoes. I try heirloom varieties from time to time, but usually only get one or two tomatoes from a large vine. It is especially frustrating when the bunnies get the one tom produced. Celebrity, as well as Heatwave and Merced, get to producing early in the season. We are usually harvesting by Memorial Day, after planting in late March (and watching for freezes.) By the middle to the end of June, the tomatoes go on vacation. Sometime I baby them through the summer for a fall harvest, but haven't been too successful there. Hope this helps. I've grown Sun Gold for more than 10 years. Last year I added Black Cherry to the trial list, but wasn't impressed. Back to all Sun Gold cherries this year. My tomato harvest is almost finished and I'll start pulling plants next week. Plan to keep 4 Sun Golds in the garden. They'll continue to produce off and on through the summer and into the fall barring insect or storm damage. These are two of our favorite summer dishes using Sun Golds. Fresh (uncooked) Tomato "Sauce" Cherry tomatoes cut in half or beefsteaks cut into bite-size pieces or combo of the two Minced garlic a little extra virgin olive oil fresh basil chiffonade lemon zest S&P Combine, cover, and let sit at room temp for a couple hours. Toss with hot pasta. Serve with grated Parmesan. and... Pasta with Sun Gold Tomatoes

I sell heirloom tomato plants but I am in Big Lake and you are in Rochester. I also sell seeds so you might want to contact me for next year. I specialize in varieties that produce well in MN; many from Russia and other north areas. The choices in smaller tomatoes are not so great as large plants but Stupice, Azoychka, Berkeley Pink Tie Dye, and my own Sweet Brown would be about 4 feet tall.
