This plant would take very little fertilizer. If you are growing it for Fritillaries then I think that little is needed. I'm sure your pot is too small now. The bigger the pot the less you will need to water it and the bigger it will get. It will eventually outgrow any pot. You will need to prune it if the butterflies don't find it. If they do the cats will do the pruning. Miracle Grow will work. I wouldn't worry about drainage if you are using this medium.

Just to add my $.02, I have to agree with pshawn that the fruit is rather unpleasant. Also, it took many years for my P. caerulea to begin fruiting. I have heard from others that they have had similar experience in it taking a few years before filled fruit forms, (try saying that 3 times fast...). Now we have to go and pluck the fruits off all spring and early summer to keep it from making "volunteers" all over the yard. For flavorful fruit, you are best in your area planting a named cultivar of P. edulis, such as 'Nancy Garrison', 'Black Knight', or 'Fredrick'. Keep it in a planter and protect from frost in the winter. It is not nearly as forgiving as P. caerulea... Hope that helps! Eric

Here's the latest: It looks like the situation has been resolved. I've been told that the hybridizer is growing some of the seedlings, that two have bloomed and they look like P. 'Mission Dolores' (P. parritae x antioquiensis). So apparently the pollen somehow came from P. antioquiensis, which is growing in the hybridizer's garden. Interestingly, as far as I can tell the seedlings resemble P. parritae in many ways, and some features, such as the petiole glands, differ significantly from P. 'Mission Dolores'. Perhaps there is variability in the cross, or maybe these change as the plant matures. I thought it was important to figure out whether the seedlings were new P. parritae clones. In this case simply waiting for the flower to bloom could have led to the loss of many of the clones if people didn't think think another hybrid was worth the time, space and effort. Plus there would have been less reason to aggressively propagate the seedlings. It was surprising that the answer to their identity came so quickly, and of course the more information the better.
