kiwi fruit from seed

can anyone please give me some tips on growing kiwi fruits from seed.

I've grown passionfruit - by burying half a passionfruit and then transplanting the seedlings - is kiwi fruit similar or should I just go and buy a male and female?

I have read somewhere that you can grow Kiwis from seeds. Could it be in one of Jackie French's books? I can't remember. So maybe you'll just have to wait till the experts get here and can tell you. :)

You would be better just buying the plants you only need one male to eight females.
You can grow them from seed but you would be waiting a long time before you found out
what sex the plants were.Have a look at the link below lots of info there from Qld. DPI

Kolomikta seeds are difficult when naturally stratified. Even if you follow instructions for stratifying, they may take two years to germinate (second stratification required). There is an easy trick to really speed things up that has worked well for me. Go to JL Hudson Seeds and order some GA3. Mix up a 1000 ppm solution of the GA3 in water (you may have to dissolve the GA3 in a little alcohol first). Soak your seeds in this solution for three days. You can then rinse them in water and sow the seeds and some will germinate in a couple of weeks without further treatment. If you give them about 3-4 weeks of cold after the soak, then all should germinate in a couple of weeks at room temp. ~kiwinut Here is a link that might be useful: GA3 at JL Hudson

Charlie, the point that I was making indirectly is that the idea that the seeds would produce females because the donor fruit is from a female must be flawed because, like you say, where would the male plants come from. All seeds come from the fruit. There are male and female trees. Only the females produce fruit. Thus all sexually produced male and female offspring must come from the seed of female trees.

I had one that I grew in a pot for 3 years, until I got tired of it (I do have the hardy ones as well, but both males and females have not yet flowered). I believe there is a very dedicated kiwi fanatic who posts in the fruit forum (in zone 6) who has successfully overwintered fuzzy kiwi by burial or some other kind of protection. I have a hardy one in a pot that has broken dormancy. I keep dormant plants in a dark-cold preserving room, but the little light that does enter the room (and the warmth, I guess from opening the door to check on the plants and get canned items) caused it to break dormancy early. I've also got 8 planted in the ground, outside...but no worries about them wakening this early. ~Chills

I germinate fuzzy kiwiÂs in an acidic soiless medium with the baggie method. Clean the kiwi seeds & place them in a baggie of medium. It will take a long time Â about a month, but they should germinate. There are about 800 seeds/fuzzy kiwi, so you should get many sprouts. The sprouts are delicate, so they need to be watched when young. Cold hardy kiwi can not be germinated this way Â they need cold stratification.

If you're in the Sunshine coast as your header says, I would not bother trying to grow Kiwifruit, as they have a significant winter chilling requirement that you'd not be able to provide. You'd get lush growth but no fruit.

Actinidia arguta, the hardy Kiwi, is a good alternative. It has a much smaller chilling requirement and is available from Daleys nursery. Ask first as it may still be unsuitable for your climate.

Growing Kiwifruit from seed is possible, but not recommended. The progeny is hugely variable and takes many (up to 10) years to fruit, which means it could be a LONG LONG time till you hit on an edible one... :)
