One thing I find useful is to provide a mulch of seashells. They keep the soil cooler, hold back the weeds, and add the lime that many species of lavender like (very slowly).

I haven't found the birds rummaging through this mulch so you might not find the shells in the grass.

I also find this form of mulch is good around Dianthus and Stachys.

It also makes a good excuse to go to the beach...and fossick for seaweed, driftwood. (LOL)

I did that in my last house. Make the washing smell nice, doesn't it? Maybe a soluble fertiliser. They don't need much of anything and they way they spread they did not need mulched. I never did.

A dressing of complete fertiliser wouldn't go astray, particularly if you have given them a No.2 haircut. And perhaps a light dusting of lime to the soil. Cutivate the soil a bit to loosen and water well to take fertiliser and lime (if applied) down into soil.

Most lavenders tend to look a bit leggy after a few years and it's probably easier to replace the plants. Take some cuttings from those prunings and keep the new plants in pot - you will have sizeable replacement plants. Or consider lavender hedges in other parts of your garden.

Thanks for those hints - we've had a little rain recently so the ground will be fairly easy to dig about in.
