Trees suitable for floodplains?

I have recently purchased 2 acres in the southern end of the Gold Coast. The land is part of an ex dairy farm and has a small creek running through it. I am wanting to plant out the area along the banks of the creek which is a fairly flat area with alluvial top soil and clay base. I am told the area will flood seasonally so I am wondering what trees would be suitable for such a flood plain and whether there is a method to keep young trees from being washed away with a flood before they become established. I believe Melaleuca's are suited to these conditions but find their appearance to be a bit 'swampy'. I am after more feature trees that are fairly quick growers and will be quite large. Any suggestions on what is suited or thoughts on what would look good?

I would suggest that you post this in the Native Plants Forum. I'm sure people there will be able to help you.
There are non-natives that will grow in these conditions, but you would have to make sure that they are not in the 'weed' category like willows and poplars or it could cost you a small fortune in the future to get rid of them.Good luck,

I'm up near the Carrara floodplain. The old dairy land contains a fair number of Erythrina which looks like crista-galli but I'm no expert and maybe its E fusca which common name of "swamp immortelle" sounds more likely. it's not an unattractive tree and quite beautiful in flower but of course thorny, and semi deciduous.
Niffsan bought the old Surfers Paradise raceway and is creating some sort of residential thing there with man-made shallow lakes and landscaping. It is of course, all flood-plain, though the soil is probably a bit sandy after their earthworks.
I would suggest you have a look up there along the Nielsens road extension and their production nursery is on Birmingham road just near Emmanuel college you might call in and have a talk to the gardeners there to see what species they are using for the areas which potentially face frequent innumdation.
IMHO some of the Melaleucas are quite lovely though.

AC: I looked up several locations between 7000 and 8000ft in AZ and CO. Don't have the data for NM. 75-90 days is probably resonable frost free. But that should give you 120 days between freezes that really cause some damage, say mid-late May until mid-late Sept. I've had great luck with all kinds of stonefruit in my greenhouse. But I do dedicate it entirely to fruit. In my climate you really need seperate greenhouses for fruit and vegetables. That's because our winter temp are 60/30F. So I need to dedicate two months in the winter strictly to getting the needed chilling. You probably wont have that problem. But if you grow things in your greenhouse that need winter chilling, like stonefruit, then you need some time in winter when daytime highs are below 60F. I've had good luck growing stonefruit, grapes, and citrus in pots. Stonefruit and citrus have worked well planted in the soil. But having grapes next to stonefruit planted in the ground in my greenhouse hasn't been the best arrangment. The grapes get too much water while the citrus and stonefruit are water stressed. It's quite common to have large trees towering over the houses in east Texas. Lots of shade that keep houses cool in east Texas. Admittedly, it's nice to stay cool like that compared to what I have to deal with right now. I have shantung maple planted about 8 feet from my house but it's only one floor story and the roof is low pitched so I don't mind if the branches eventually spread out over the roof. It's a pretty strong tree so I'm not too worried about it. It won't get that overly huge tree either. Two or higher stories houses or tall buildings are another thing... You'd need more of columnar trees that would do the job in that situation. Also most new houses are on small lots so it's inevitable that branches will eventually spread over the roof. It's more of a question of which tree is suitable for that. Bradford and Silver maple are not in my area.

Both Rhamnus alaternus and Prunus lusitanica have glossy green foliage and can be pruned/sheared to keep them more formal. Depends whether you want a broadleaf or needle - if your architecture is Mediterranean the cypress would work well but often look out of place with other styles. There are a bunch of Pittosporum that can be clipped.

Wisconsin, clay soil, emerald ash is in the near vicinity. I do have a Pagoda Dogwood in another part of the yard. I think Fringe Tree is lovely but may be too big for that area, this is currently a very popular tree in my village, planted by private landowners and the village. Star Magnolia is another widely planted tree here but is a possibility. I had wondered if a Northwind Japanese Maple would be a good choice, it only gets to be about 10 feet wide, but don't know if it can handle the sun and wind in that location. I think a trimmed up shrub might be the best choice, maybe the hydrangea. Going to Minor's today, they have Limelight in tree form. But just window shopping for now. Hi Brett,

She-oak trees for sure. Also, off the top of my head, try Liquidambars (great autumn colour too...naturally found on river flats in sth-east USA).

Definitely Australian Lilly-Pilly tree/shrub varieties and River Red Gums would go well. Beach Almond trees, Black Almond trees would also go very well.

Other ideas might include some Australian rainforest or open forest trees such as figs, tallow-wood, Flame trees, Crows Ash trees. I'm sure they could withstand occasional short-term flooding. Hope this helps. (ps. staking them or building up an earth bank around your trees might help them to withstand being washed away??)
