Help! Gleditsia - ?dying

We recently replanted a 3 m tall specimen from a pot into a planter (1m X 1m X 0.5m deep). The plant began to show brown tips on its leaves initially only at the top. Then gradually the tips of the leaves of branches progressively lower began to brown off. At the moment all leaves have brown tips but I'm worried the entire plant will go brown soon.

Initially for the first week or two, I watered daily to twice daily - good soaks as they say you need when replanting, but now I water perhaps every 2-3 days as I was afraid maybe I was overwatering. The plant was taken out of its pot in its entirety and the rest of the planter box was backfilled with topsoil we had in a pile over summer - this was quite dry and water resistant and I had to mix up with potting mix to get any water to absorb in. I used an old carpet around the base of the plant to keep evaporation down as I didn't want to mulch yet as the floor surrounding the planter had to be tiled and I didn't want to create too much of a mess.

Any ideas why the specimen seems to be browning off starting from the top down and only leaf tips affected presently?
