... of what this is?

Far Nth Qld - Mareeba- dryish country. Sandy loam over clay. We have just had a lot of rain and these have sprung up on my new block.

Hi Judy
I first saw these in understory near a Mackay beach last year and meant to get an ID. Your post is a sign to do something about it :)

Rob, if you have less than 30 1/4" between the two walls, it won't work for hairdrying. The user will be banging elbows into both walls. And yes, buyers will notice how narrow it is.. i know no women who sit down at a vanity to put on make-up. I certainly don't. It's a lovely, romantic thought, but not based on reality. The days of long, elaborate cosmetic rituals are long gone. As others have said, making this a make-up vanity will not update the condo, it will date it. My choice would be to make it storage or a spot for a pretty piece of furniture, as others have suggested. If you decide a sink is absolutely necessary, please improve the lighting. And change the flooring to something waterproof and cleanable! The thought of toothpaste on the carpet makes me shudder.

Any idea if this is a Jacobean hutch? Any idea what era it is from?
Q

I think it's 1920s-30s, definitely with Jacobean influences in those fat legs but probably all kinds of influences. I know they aren't super trendy right now but I love these cabinets and yours has really nice details. Will you be able to glue the wood doodads back together after replacing the glass? Unless it's marked or you get randomly lucky and find a catalog, it will be hard to learn the manufacturer of it. Good score!

A Perennial mystery. Any ideas?

I moved from a pocket of extremely sandy, nutrient poor soil to the heaviest clay I've ever seen, also nutrient poor. I brought some plants with me, and some didn't make it, others took a year or so to adapt and some hang in there but don't do much--saddest ones my gorgeous Lycoris sprengeri. The Galanthus really struggle too. Much of WV is clay--but not as bad as mine. No chemicals--my place is a piece of a larger lot with a house built in the 1920s. In fact, they used to keep a cow on my lot years ago--not that it made any improvement. PH, pretty similar--I did do soil tests. What is doing well here is quite a long list--Viburnums (except this year the V. pragense I mentioned above) of several species and cultivars, Iteas, Hydrangea paniculata and quercifolia, Iberis, Magnolia virginiana, Physocarpus, Fringe tree, redbuds, Amelanchier 'Autumn Brilliance, Halesia 'Wedding Bells', Siberian iris, Iris fulva, I. prismatica, and Iris cristata, daffodills, Silene regia, Amsonia tabernaemontana, Silphium gracile, Panicums, Andropogon 'blackhawk', Calamagrastis 'Karl Foerster', Sesleri 'Greenlee', Carex grayi, Heptacodium, Monarda 'Claire Grace', Coreopsis verticillata, Agastache 'Blue Fortune' and A. 'Blue Blazes' and on and on. The Rudbeckia deaths remain a mystery.

I have Lancifolia and it seems different. Also, Lancifolia is not one I would have potted as I have so many. Here’s a pic of both together: My potted one seems to have longer leaves and Lancifolia does not have red petioles at the bottom . The name Pineapple Pole does not sound familiar I’ll check that out. Thanks debra

You ought to report this to the national weed organisation CRC Weed Management. It could be invasive.

Greg, you are barking up the wrong tree there. Tacca leontopetaloides is a good Australian native, or as good as many that have been known from far northern Australia for the last 200+ years. Common in both Qld and NT, it was collected by Robert Brown and probably also by Banks & Solander. It may have been introduced by man earlier but if so it has had a long time to do its worst!

Thanks, Judy and Tony. There is a benefit to forgetting about things, for months at a time :) Other people do your work for you!

I stand corrected. Just found a photo of it in the Australian National Botanic Gardens photo database for Australian plants.

It obviously is wide spread through out the Pacific if it is in Hawaii and was traditionally used by polynesions.

One of the sites I went to was all about weeds and potential weeds. This rated a no, not a weed vote.
Interesting to hear of the food and medicinal uses. There is heaps coming up on the block at the moment.

See it common-named as native arrowroot in a T'ville council reveg document. In hindsight, I should have *saved* a couple from the site where I saw them, as development was the intent.

Enjoy your new place, Judy!
