You did not state where you live only zone 10 and that could be anywhere. they are not that expensive or my wife would not have bought me one. They grow quite rapidly and they do not like any temp's below 40. At that temperature all their leaves fall of but they seem to hold up anyway as there a few in my neighborhood and they are in the ground. I have a few in pots so I can bring them in during cold weather. Mine are a yellow with a paint brush stroke of red on the edges of some of the blooms. They do get to tall and need to be cut back at least once a year or they will out grow their pots. Frangipani flowers"Plumeria" species are easily propagated by taking a cutting of leafless stem tips in Spring and allowing them to dry at the base before inserting them into soil. They are also propagated via tissue culture both from cuttings of freshly elongated stems and aseptically germinated seed. They like water but not wet feet. As for the time of planting, One of my branches broke off and I just stuck it into the pot and watered well and it has bloomed again this year and is doing fine so I know they are not that fussy to start.

Somebody needs to attach images of this. I suspect that it is not a problem at all but, as Jean says, aerial root initials. A picture would solve the mystery in a nanosecond.

I've heard that Aztec Gold is supposed to be extremely easy to root. I don't know because I don't have an Aztec Gold, unfortunately, but heard more than one time about its ease. I do know that whites and yellows are, in general, much easier to root than rainbows and reds. Some pinks are probably not too hard either. The easier to root, I find, the more vigorous the roots, the faster they grow, and the less likely the plant is to get tip rot, stem rot or other problems, and the quicker it will bloom. Mexican Snowball cultivar seems to be very vigorous to me, as does Slaughter Pink and my unnamed whites and lighter pinks. Slaugher Pink, however, is not as desirable a flower to me because it has floppy petals, is not pure white or pink, fades and doesn't have that great a keeping quality. The same can go for some seedlings, but, of course, not all. All seedlings are their own unique plant, and can be rare and unusual or very plain and dull, or even not bloom for a very, very long time. I've heard the 5 to 15 percent of all seedlings are good to keep, and the rest are not worth the trouble of cultivation/space, etc. You can increase this chance by getting seeds from cultivars you really like. My recommendation is to try an unrooted cutting with your favorite white or yellow cultivar. If you really want a red or rainbow, it may be well worth it to get a rooted or a grafted plant. If you have lots of patience, and won't be too disappointed with a floppy white flower, and have room to grow them, try seeds. Once you pick your cultivar, you can ask others, or the seller, how easy it is to root before you actually buy it. Shop around, too. Plants have gone for $80 + and that's a lot to spend on one plant, esp if you're just starting out. One last thing, whether you are rooting cuttings or growing seeds, keep the soil warm. If the temp is much below 80 F or so, esp below 70, the seeds will rot. Same goes for the cutting. Without roots, it needs to really set at a warm temp to grow them, and keep it on the dry side. Without roots, your cutting may rot in wet soil, esp if it is not an easy and quick rooter. Good luck, have fun, and you'll probably get addicted.

With some bubble wrap inside (or just some strips of cloth) the cuttings would be protected from most damage wouldn't they?
