sugar loaf cabbage?

g'day,

my sugar loaf cabbages are getting to picking size but they are all loose packed or sort of empty and light. my watering regime has been more this year than last year and we have had more rain that last year. the ones last year were smaller but tight and heavy for their size. they have been in since about the end of march into april there sometime. the plants look good and healthy.

i'm thinking maybe this winter has been too mild by this time last year we had, had 8 frost days this season only 2 in the autumn. as i said earlier they have been given more water than last year.

Yes you are right there Len, I looked up last years diary to find that the second week in June the temperature's ranged from 4-20, yesterday it was 16-25 so I would say a lot milder even here in Brissie.

But thats nothing to what it was like in Melbourne last week when I was there they recorded the highest temperature for a June day ever. Maybe I took our beautiful weather down with me ......MM.

At the moment (being this period of history) we are suffering what has dubbed..."Global Warming"
Here in Tasmania we have just completed the driest consecutive 12 months period in the history of (white)man ...and who knows maybe all man
Sorry to ruin your day but it is not your fault...relax no-one is going to blame you for the high temperatures...or at least not all of it

I live very close to Sugar Loaf and often take out of town visitors there. It is mostly one long street (Kings Highway) with a few side streets of shops. I believe the pre-requisite to owning a shop is that the owner must also live there. There are shops with very unusual and handcrafted items. A lot of jewelry, soaps, artwork, sculpture, Christmas items, books, clothing. I buy a lot of my candles from the hand-dipped candle shop. It's good for a day of leisurely strolling and shopping and everyone is very friendly and helpful. In several shops you can see the artisan working on his/her crafts. They have several places to stop to eat (the Barnsider is my favorite). At the end of the village is a large theater (Lyceum, I think) with ample parking. Most shops are small and tight, so small children really need to be well-behaved. Have fun.

Just to leapfrog back to the original subject for a sec, I had a bag of lemons that were on their way out, so this recipe was perfect timing for me. I baked two loaves last night, with almost all the same changes you made, Barnmom--I didn't have any buttermilk, so I used sour cream thinned with regular milk, and when I went to get the ground ginger, there wasn't any there. I also ran out of granulated sugar midway through (that was unexpected!), so I subbed the shortfall with light brown sugar. And also did the powdered sugar/poke holes glaze. They came out great! I stuck the extra one in the freezer last night, but it may not be there long, since we're already halfway through the first one. Thanks for posting this--it's a lovely, lemony, moist cake, and I'll make it again for sure.

Thank you Annie! I'm definitely going to make that on my next bread baking event. It sounds wonderful! I really am enjoying the apple bread I made because it's got sweetness in it but it's not overly dessert-like sweet. This bread sounds like it's got that same quality. I lined the loaf pans with parchment paper for the apple bread and I will do the same thing for this one. Thanks for the warning about stickiness!! May

Yes Iam home got back last Friday, did I hear the word rain, are you joking Peter I dont know what it looks like anymore, hummmm I remember it used to be wet as someone said on the news recently, """ It has to rain one day""" I wonder which day and in what year.

We got no summer rain this year which puts paid to the so called ""Wet Season"" Brisbane used to have, it was 18 degrees low overnight much too warm for June and they say it will rain tomorrow, well we will see, just for once I would like them to be right!!!!.......MM.

HI MISTY MORN AND EVERYONE ELSE WELL WE HAD 11 MIL OF RAIN LAST SATURDAY BETTER THAN NOTHING I GUESS (SMALL MERCIES) BUT THIS MORNING IT WAS MINUS 2, JUST A TAD CHILLY, I ACTUALLY PICKED MUSHROOMS ON SUNDAY YUMMY ,THE SUN IS COMING OUT SO MAYBE SOME MORE TODAY, BECAUSE WE ARE TUCKED IN THE SIDE OF A HILL WE DIDNT GET THE FROSTS THAT I COULD SEE DOWN ON THE FLATS,TAKE CARE AND HAVE A LOVELY DAY IN THE GARDEN RAIN OR NO RAIN
