Hi Jim, Well, that is what I thought, but he was rather insistent that he lives in Chile and does this all the time and that is how he does it.....I personally do not see the point in floating a seed.....I'm sort of take that naturalist approach with the Hippeastrum.....I put them in dirt and off they go just like in the wild.....although I've only done this with maybe 12 species and a half-dozen F1s very recently. Thanks for the fantastic info about Rhodophiala. I've been using a mix of 50% seed starting mix and 50% perlite for my Hippeastrum, but I'm not satisfied. It drains very fast as you can imagine, but I just feel like it holds water too long!! I've got a bunch now with their 3rd leaves after 3.5 months, but I remain vigilent and think I need to do something different on the ones from Chile. I've thought about a mix of 1:1 well decomposed pine bark and perlite (I use this for my Arisaemma and Amorphophallus), but this holds almost no water until the pine bark decomposes some. What would you think of 30% organic humus from the local garden center and 70% perlite?? I tend to send any extra seed that I can obtain to my friend in India. He puts lots of Amaryllids into TC and I'm hoping he can be successful with these. Then even if I manage to screw mine up I have an easy source for getting them back :o) Dan

Sweet peas are the first annuals to get planted outside as they like cool weather, so if you keep them moist in your unheated greenhouse they will be fine, but watch for very sunny days if your greenhouse gets too hot. Tomatoes should be seeded by now, and they will be fine,keep them moist, not wet, and pinch back the first set of leaves, if they get leggy, you can gently push the stem further down into the soil. I agree with both Jordi and MBT, but also try seedrack.com. Walmart has a mixed variety seed pack for .97 for about 12 seeds, while seedrack gives you about 200 'mixed' seeds for $3.96. However, you can get specific species of seeds from the Cactus and Succulent Society for $2.00 for 5 or 10 seeds or .50 a packet for members. You can find the Seed Depot and its listing on the CSSA website. Saguaros are very easy to grow. Sagebrush
