Most likely too much of the good stuff,

They went yellow before the good stuff!

Ok I had the same trouble with my silverbeet but not quite yellow more a very pale shade of green like a Granny Smith apple.

About three weeks ago I took all the mulch off that bed, got my new bag of ground up cow manure ( bought from a Sunday market about two months ago, not the bagged stuff from Bunnings) and mixed that through, I am pleased to say that now my Silverbeet are looking more of a dark green.

Petinia's like nitogen rich animal manure soils, was the chook manure old, as you should never use it fresh, best idea is to prepare the garden bed a few weeks in advance put homemade compost in it a bit of cow manure, bung in a bit of lime, plant a few weeks later then you should have the best petunias on Qld.

Did you test the ph of the soil if you did and it is in the acid range lower than say 6 add lime, if up the other way past 8 it is alkline add sulpher or sulphate of iron, but at a rough guess I would say it is acid, because we dont get any of that good stuff from the sky so the soils are lacking nitogen, so lime it. You could also buy a small bag of trace elements and put a little of that around each plant it may help.

Thanks MM. I do know my soil is very alkaline, and the chook manure was a bit decomposed. I have decided to pull them out and concentrate on something a bit easier, zinnias and marigolds.
