Can you grow I. reticulata up there in Qld? I would check this out before you buy an expensive bulb. My understainding is that they like the same conditions as crocus. I am unsure if George is available in Australia, but we are fairly limited for reticulatas here. Try the current plant finder .....better still I will go look it up now ...... No luck...
It lists Harmony, J.S.Dijt, Katherine Hodgkin and Pauline only.
If you are looking for just something like it, I would suggest Harmony as a good alternative. Quite a few bulb nurseries carry this cultivar now. Be aware that the bloom time is very brief, snails adore these delicacies, and any heat will dehydrate the delicate blooms very quickly. In the USA it is most common to see blooms poking through the snow.

Jan..thanks for your help..yes I can grow them here even though sub-tropical, I live in an area about 2000ft high so mostly cool all year and quite cold in winter but no snow. I have harmony already and they did quite well..george is dark blue and would contrast with harmony a sort of purple...can grow most bulbs up here but not tulips very successfully..and I will keep a good eye out for snails..but more pressing round here are hares, bandicoots and scrub turkeys...thanks again, Danny

The Iris reticulata at our place live in fairly large pots - about 14" across and about 10" deep. (We have a tendency to make bulb kebabs with the garden fork...) The mix is free-draining and has pumice included. The bulbs are planted around four inches deep, and they were planted at the 'right time' of the year. After flowering they are fed with tomato fertiliser, or slow release. Over summer they receive rain water and the occasional splosh from a passing hose. They don't actually 'bake', as such. And they are rarely disturbed. I probably won't decant them until they are more crowded - perhaps next year. They've been in those pots for at least three years. Huey, the Weather God, has sent a couple of mild summers our way and the retics have responded with plenty of flowers - pale and dark blue, and the purply-red ones. The leaves come up between four and six inches high before they complete their cycle. This year I bought some end of season bulbs and planted them close to the surface and in a shallow bowl, about six inches in depth. They have come up and several have flowered. The leaves came first and are about 12" high. I bought a further bunch and have potted them on but they have yet to appear although a nosey finger says that roots have begun and a few tentative shoots have emerged. It has been an exceptionally wet winter. This last lot were bought in July (your January equivalent). I'm interested to see how they'll respond in subsequent years.

They don't make it up here. Makes me sad because I do like them. Sometimes some come back for a couple years but less and less and even less blooms and then nothing. If I planted 100 I can expect to see 50 live through the winter and wet spring. Only half of those 50 bloom and the following year it's halfed again the same way. I was kind of hoping Walmart was going to get some in as spring bulbs this year but they didn't. Last year they had a big bag for next to nothing but I passed because I was too busy. The notheast I think is just too cold and wet for them. I kind of see a bit of a pattern here. TX is dry compared to the east, so is most of CA. MS is a wet state, same for NJ and NH. MS is certainly mild enough but lots of rain. Anybody have luck in the northern plains states or provinces? They are treated as annuals here. Cheap enough so you don't bother digging and storing them. I really don't remember but I think walmart's cheap bag was 250 of them for $3.88. My husband bought some for the gardens at the state prison and kind of got mad at me when I told him they wouldn't make it. Couldn't understand why walmart would sell something that wouldn't survive. Actually Walmart's plant dept is full of perennials and shrubs that won't make a harsh winter up here.

Since they're dwarf and bulbous my guess would be that they are i. reticulata(usually purple or blue) or i. danfordiae(sp?)(yellow). I don't know much about either but I have grown both. They just keep dwindling away little by little in my garden. I don't know if any will bloom next year. My advice (though I am no expert on these bulbous iris) would be to let them grow any leaves they want. My impression is that leaves can only do good by gaining more energy from the sun. Even if they're shocked frozen for the winter it seems the little bit of growth would help and I don't think there's much you could do to stop them if you tried. I hope that helps. Maybe someone who's better with bulbs could hep you. I think there is a bulb forum also. You might try there. Most people are focused on the bearded iris(the AIS has no involvement with bulbous iris as I understand it), but the other types deserve more attention. Good luck. Brock

Try Marcus Harvey in Tasmania. He might not have it on his catalogue list, but he may very well grow it. He would be the most likely supplier in Australia.
