Iris reticulata: getting blooms every year

ornata

I've planted Iris reticulata bulbs in the past, had lovely flowers the following spring, and nothing thereafter. I read that the bulbs have a habit of fragmenting into bulblets after their first year and not flowering again. Is there a way that I can prevent this, perhaps by planting them more deeply? I'd be grateful for advice/tips from those of you who grow them successfully. Many thanks.
