wanted: have: ponytails

We have heaps of small ponytails that we were going to sell but if someone wants to trade something we will consider that. We like ferns, cycads, palms, and plants that go with those. I also like dwarf liriope, Ajuga, some kalanchoe, begonias, and shade loving plants. Whatever you think would go with a tropical or rainforest-style garden we'll consider.

Hi Donna,
I am just after advice on how to propagate ponytails. I have a very large ponytail with considerable growth on the main trunk and often wondered if I could cut them off and grow them but was unsure. Would you mind telling me how one propagates these plants? I have some common, green leaf liriope,if you would like me to send you some.

Hi Halina ....Thats what you do just cut them off and pot them I would not water very much.

I have some of them...I can sell you a few I saved them from a bulldozer last week and allso some Cardbord Cycads Thay survived in pots on benches for months with with hardly any water and have about a 20 inch tall trunk.I felt sorry for them and have more than I need.

Yea they re expensive, we have a garden center here that had them at one time for $20 but they stopped carrying them. There is a guy on ebay, who lives in Titusville that charges about $40 for his, he told me that he had some kind of deal with Norway or somewhere like that to get them imported..dont know how true it is...But thank you for your suggestion....

Thanks for posting the info on Ponytails. I have often thought you could propagate them by cutting the offshoots but was never confident enough to try. It was also rather alarming to know they could grow so tall as I have one right next to our house - just hope the root system is not too invasive. Thanks again, I found the article very informative.

Hi again. I'm sorry but I was a bit hasty in offering my ponytails without consulting my husband. At the moment I can't give any away unless the trade is something we don't have already and of equal value to a ponytail or two (or several).
Halinka, sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. Unfortunately I have enough liriope now to divide and plant all through my gardens, but thank you anyway.

mm, Ive done the same thing and planted one right next to the house! does anyone know how successful it would be to dig it out and pot up? It's been in the ground for about 4 years and is 1 1/2 metres tall, and the base is about 20 cms wide? does it have a big root system to dig out?

They are dead-easy to transplant, even when they are 20 years old. Their roots aren't too big and they hold their nutrients in their base so they don't suffer at all. We have been successful every time, touch wood!
