Different coloured cotton flower

Due to the "technical difficulties" I can't post this photo on my other message so here is the different coloured cotton flower next to a normal one. It isn't out as much yet but I had to go out and would have missed it.

Amazing that GH....You would think that Cotton would have the same coloured flower, but then again different varieties, I suppose different colours..Thanks for that....Cheers...MM.

If its truly all one plant, not two separate plants stuck together by accident in the same pot, this would be known as a "bud sport" -- not rare at all, this is the way many, many varieties of plants have been discovered. In particular, plants that are color variations of other varieties, such as 'Red Anjou' pear, are often bud sports. Per wikipedia, there are 42 patented bud sport varieties of Red Delicious apple alone.

Why would flower colour change?

Hydrangeas change according to aluminum uptake not iron. Many flowering plants revert to parental genetics in subsequent generations. It's not a desirable trait but entirely predictable in some plants. Try planting a favorite color of yarrow, lol.

So, Jeanne...which are the "true" Nelly Moser flowers? The giant pale white ones with the sort of pale pink stripe, or the extravagantly pink but smaller second batch of flowers? I'm just ecstatic to have it blooming at all this second year, and have it with so many new large shiny green leaves. What a contrast to the sickly runt of the nursery's litter that I planted last year! The nursery even consented to give me a discount on this Nelly because it was the last Nelly they had and it was admittedly a "loser" looking plant. I guess it liked the Plant-tone fertilizer I used, its early March pruning, and its regular watering. Go Nelly go!!

My Hoya pubicalax 'Pink Silver' took about two years to bloom from the cutting stage. I initially had my plant in very bright conditions where the leaves were a bright yellowish green with red markings, all the sun may have helped it bloom sooner. I currently grow this plant in a shadier location and it has gone back to a medium green colour but it still blooms for me there. There are a bunch of new peduncles but they don't seem to be maturing and have all but stalled since they developed last fall. Sandy maybe you should try moving your plant to a brighter area or perhaps providing more artificial light and maybe that will get your plant to bloom this summer. Mike

GH, that is normal, you will find they both open out to be yellowish, just makes the bush look good. Have you any small bolls starting to form yet ? Marion

Thanks for your comments. Marion, yes there is some bolls starting one has been there for a while but still very dark green and hard, be a while yet I think. The 2 colours look good as there is both yellow and the orangy colour on the same plant. At first I thought it might be the one flower that changed as it opened or closed but found it was different flowers. It is actually quite an attractive bush, I just wish the flowers opened out more.

Cotton from seed to open bolls and cotton picking time is usually about 6 months. It is an interesting plant. Have fun with it. Marion
