grosse lisse ...help for a beginner

Hi everyone.

A new guy on the block, Adelaide here.

Any one who cares to read back and follow some of the threads you ppl have left could not be anything but impressed with the knowledge and devotion to gardening, let alone life styles and friendships shared here.I ask for simple help please.

I purchased a glass house recently and in my excitement hastily bought some Grosse Lisse toms seeds and right now I am growing these plants using hydroponics. They are growing very fast and look strong and healthy..

I could easily google Grosse Lisse to get a description of this plants characteristics, flavor, vigor etc. but after reading just some of the notes you ppl have left I thought it wiser to ask here and get the truth.

My Glass house is 2.1 mts high.and the plants sit about 300mm off the floor, judging from the growth and stem thickness to date I would ask what height do these toms grow too? ...in normal but crowded situations what is the distance between plantings normally?... Have I grown a variety worth eating? ...and... any more real life imformation please ????

Up in Townsville we grew them over 7ft, 2.1mts high it was so funny as hubby had to wire extentions on to the stakes and we had to get up on the ladder to pick them.

Don't know what size they would grow in your glass house in SA though, I dont like planting too close as they get to many problems, but I am sure the Guys on this forum will put you right about that. Those cherry toms grow very tall too, here in Brissie over 2.1 mts as well. but it could be the heat. Good Luck with your plants......MM.

Seonau, nice to have another SA poster here, welcome! I'm sure you'll have success growing just about any variety, because once it gets to the top of the greenhouse you can always let it flop or even let it crawl around the top of the walls if you tie it to the greenhouse supports here and there.

I haven't grown Grosse Lisse so I can't help you with what to expect. However, I'll be offering seeds from this season's growout shortly.... just need to get my act together.... so keep an eye on the Exchange Forum if you'd like to try some different colours, shapes and sizes. All I'll be asking for is a Self Addressed Stamped Envelope.

It's not difficult but there's a learning curve. I fed my family of three and sold fresh greens in a 22 x 48 greenhouse all of last winter. You don't have to heat the greenhouse - you're better off if you don't. You need to learn what will grow and can be harvested in an unheated greenhouse. I bounce between zones 4 and 5. The greenhouse will add another half zone to bump you up to 6a. A layer of heavy duty row cover on hoops will bump you up to 6b. Don't try to grow tomatoes, peppers and other warm season crops in an unheated greenhouse in winter. You'll need to grow cold weather greens and root crops. Growth stops here around mid December and doesn't start again til about the end of the first week in February when the sun has gotten a little higher. During the time greens and roots aren't growing you can harvest fresh vegetables. You'll need to get your plants and seeds in with plenty of time for them to get established before they stop growing. The closer you get to December the slower the plants are going to grow. I'll transplant seedlings in September and October. Seeds will go in sometime in late August as space allows. Carrots, beets and turnip can be harvested in the winter. Tatsoi, bok choi, beet greens, cold weather lettuces and spinach are easy to grow in an unheated greenhouse. Agreed, it's not sourdough bread. If it rots, put it in there. Everyone has their own rules, but here's what I *don't* put in. Anything that has touched meat because our dog has access to the pile(s). Bones, sticks bigger than a finger, dairy, anything really salty or greasy, meat, weeds with viable seeds, anything that gives me a rash, any material with thorns, walnut shells. HTH u get started! You might want to start considering what you'll do when your bin gets full. At some point, you need to leave the compost alone to "finish." What will you do with compostable materials you accumulate during that time? A holding tank - like a garbage can, a ground pile next to your bin, a 2nd bin? Depending on how fast you fill up your bin, this quandry could present itself next week or next season...

Congrats on your new gardening adventure!! I wish I had easy access to horse manure for composting. Too bad you're not my neighbor AR Dramaqueen, I'd GIVE you all the perennial herbs you could want. Every year I beg friends and family and yes even strangers to come and take divisions from my yard. Herbs are very, very easy to grow in the ground but in my experience hard to keep happy in pots. If you can make a herb bed somewhere in the yard your herb gardening venture will be so much easier. Particularly when starting seeds, moisture levels are critical. You may want to check locally to see if there are any other herb gardeners close to you. Most gardeners are thrilled to take you on a tour and provide you with starter divisions. I still remember my dad taking me to a "yard sale" when I was about 10 years old. An elderly lady was selling her daylily plants in preparation for moving to a retirement village. We took an instant shine to each other and she spent a lot of time showing me how to pollinate flowers to make new hybrids, how to divide and set plants, etc. You could see that she had a lifetime passion for gardening and was happy to "set the seed" in another person. By the end of our visit to her yard I had a station wagon full of lovely plants and a head full of information. I don't know that she even let my dad pay her for the plants, I can't remember. I do remember that 6 or 7 years later my high school science project was on hybridizing daylilies and that I credited Pansy Corriher for the information and starter plants.

Thought I'd mention that with the wilts, one aid in diagnosis is to cut a cross section of stem and have a look for discoloration -- here's a good site on both Fusarium and Verticillium wilts. href=http://ohioline.osu.edu/hyg-fact/3000/3122.html So, that may be something you may want to look into, if you're thinking it's not Early Blight. However, don't expect what you're seeing in your garden to look exactly like that picture. I think it is a rather extreme example of the spots myself. Also, I find that the spots don't really tend to always be that round or oval. And you will also see some 'half spots' along the leaf margins. But again, look carefully at what spots you do see, and look closely for that banding, as in: "Leaf symptoms of early blight are large irregular patches of black, necrotic tissue surrounded by larger yellow areas. The leaf spots have a characteristic concentric banding appearance (oyster-shell or bull's eye)." Have you had a look at the pictures of Alternaria canker, bacterial speck, septoria, etc. to rule those out?

That is encouraging news PP. I had this idea I might of made a mistake in so hastily choosing Grosse lisse. Seeing your local PP if all goes to plan here and I get a few toms, and since you have not tried them, I will save a few for you. Catch ya

Hi Seonau,
Grosse Lisse can get very big, but since it's an indeterminate (so-called climbing or vining type), you can happily prune it to suit. Spacing in a hydroponic system, which I know nothing about, is different to what you'd need in the ground. I'm sure you can get away with quite close spacing. You can expect reasonably good quantities of medium sized red fruit with quite acceptable, though not exceptional, flavour. All up, a perfectly good tomato, but do try others.

There's also a hybrid GL around that produces smaller fruit.
