Dendranthema (Chrysanthemums)

I have been trying to get hold of those lime green chrysanthemums to grow in Perth. The florist tells me they are dendranthema and come in green colours named "Kermit", 'Green Bird", 'Revert' and possibly another.

I am unable to lay my hands on seeds anywhere so wondered if anyone thinks it might be successful to strike cuttings from flowers now (whilst in shops) and what is the best way of attempting this please.

Anything is worth a try I reckon. You will have to find little shoots on the sides of the stems for success. I doubt that the actual flower stem would take....but who knows; it won't cost more to stick a few of them in as well. Just make sure you remove any buds and flowers and remove the lower leaves then pop them in some propagating mix. You can dip them in a little rooting hormone if you wish.
You can make a little greenhouse with a clear plastic bag with sticks to hold it up or half a large soft drink bottle.

My parents used to grow and sell chryssie's. I recall getting the tips and propogating them however never the main flower stem. If you have any sideshoots they should be ok. They were soft tip cuttings we used. As Dee says just take a cutting but it only needs to be about 10cm long at the most. Remove all lower leaves (leave hardly any on just the stem is enough) and pop them in mix. We used a mix that was mostly very small pebbles and sand about 4-5cm deep so the water drained through and they all struck easily in glasshouses...

Ahhh, the confusing world of mums!! Nearly all the mums you find will be selections of Chrysanthemum x morifolium (syn. Dendranthema x grandiflorum). This is THE most common mum sold and accounts for both the hardy, fall blooming selections found in most garden centers in late summer as well as the more exotic looking and quite tender florist's mums. According to the Chrysanthemum Society, they are divided into two classifications - garden mums and exhibition (florist, football, etc.) mums with the only difference being the hardiness of the plant. As a general rule of thumb, the more exotic looking (and large) the flower, the less hardy it is.

I believe the taxonimists have reclassified these plants back to a Chrysanthemum, but the only one that I have in my garden is C. 'Country Girl'. She performs great, blooming in Oct for me (pink), has great foliage throughout the season, and is somewhat deer resistant. The deer have nibbled on her a few times, but she doesn't seem to be a favorite.

Dee -- the clear plastic knife rules me out as the source. I don't think I've ever used that method of marking plants, even on the day of the swap. Are the ones you have single or double? Mine are most definitely single blossoms. Very daisy-like. And still going strong -- I LOVE them! (As an added plus ... the ones in the picture were cut 10 days ago, and look like they just came in from the yard today.) Jaynine -- I'd seen the photos of Cambodian Queen (and now have to have it!) but from the photo, there's more pink in it than mine have. Mine (the petals) are very distinctly part white, part very soft pink (at the tips, maybe half the petal is pink in tone, from nearly white to a soft lavendar-pink at the tip), the rest of the petals are all white. That's why I ended up with a deduction (nothing more than that) of Venus (Pink). All I know is that now that I've seen these other photos, my goal is a BIG mixed bed of hardy mums for NEXT fall -- from Cambodian Queen to the dark pink J. C. Weigelan.

Funny you should mention that, Skybird! The boys were drawing pictures on a couple of them today. That picture was taken a month ago, and all of the green ones have ripened up nicely since then. I really want to use the trellis for a Charentais melon next year, but I am tempted to grow small pie pumpkins. Sigh!!! If only I had more space. Okay, since you guys are such good computer tutors, how do you put the links within the text? I know how to do it at the bottom of a post, but not within the message. Very helpful indeed. I always find cuttings such a hit and miss affair but sounds promising. Will let you know in a few months how things go.
How damp should I keep soil please as looking back on my cutting strike rates I think water is the problem. I never seem to know how much water is too little or too much...

A lot of people find it easier to use a fine spray bottle for watering seeds or small cuttings...keep it just moist, not wet.
