Bishop of Llandaff

This year I planted 'en masse' Bishop of Llandaff Dahlias which have rewarded all who gaze upon them.

Sometimes we need to do things differently in Perth so does anyone know whether I should pull out the tubers or is it okay to leave them in ground and how and when should they be fertilised please.

With regards to mail orders from the east I really have enjoyed the reading. WA is such a problem at times. For other West Aussies who may be interested I have used Tesselaars, I have also succesfully used burnett.net.au/~theretreat/theretreat.htm (sorry don't know how to insert hyperlink). This lady, from Qld, sends cuttings of geraniums - see site - and waits until she has a few orders before sending to WA to cut down on costs. The others are Diggers, Dis delightful Plants and Norgates - any other plant senders to WA? Also has anyone used Thompson and Morgan seeds in UK and Jelitto in Germany?

I'm in Perth and I have dahlias which keep coming back each year without lifting. They don't seem to rot over winter, presumably because of our very free draining "soil". I knew there had to be at least one positive to gardening in glorified beach sand!

There are several others who do send to WA. I did get bulbs from Tesselaars one year, band they were great, but no follow up blooms. Must be my snail farm, ha, ha, but I lost so many young plants it was not funny. If it is not the snails, it has been the baking heat this year.

Thanks, GLynis. : ) I wonder if I have anything you would like in trade. Is the Bishop as great as I think? This is the one flower that always catches my eye in books. I do have a red Bishop's Children that seems quite close but the foliage is gangly and the flowers want to face downward. Debbie

Yes, when I dug up my Dahlias, there were many in the soil between those bulb parts. I guess they like the soil and mulch stuff (cut stems and bits) to feed on. I tried to wash them off with a hose, Not wanting them or nasty cutworm things in the boxes while storing the bulbs. Bye, Lin

I have been unable to find these elsewhere in DC, and was about to order some from Brent & Becky's. But I am not a COSTCO member. Is there a chance somebody would be willing to pick me up enough to have two plants each of Landalf and York? I would happily pay you plus swap off other plants... Lynn

Rose, i've used Jellito and found the seeds to be pretty good and in generous amounts. The downside is the exchange rate for Euro. Their catalogue is excellent too.

Hi Rose! I brought the tubers with me to Esperance and they are sprouting well. I have also dahlia seed called "The Bishop's Children" also with the dark foliage so will see what comes of them. Got it from the US. I love it here. Much cooler and far less snails. I am having a lot more success in the garden. Ann
