Help with Garden Mulcher

I am going to buy a mulcher and I don't know any brand can any of the members help?

Hi Bev...I would not buy anything but a Greenfields, Its still on my wish list.

Would have to agree, I have a petrol powered Greenfield. I got it because it is one of the only mulchers that effectively shreds palm fronds. It starts first time every time and works like a trojan.

The "Brass Nut" holding the carb bowl on is the Main Jet. There are a couple TINY holes in it. At least ONE is clogged. Use a piece of wire like found on the tie for a loaf of bread to clean the hole.

Try to find Ruth Stout's books at the NYPL. She was the "grande dame" of mulching with all sorts of materials, primarily hay/straw. While most folks associate her with mulching vegetable gardens, she did have lots of flowers and discusses using the hay method with flowers in her books. You can google and get lots of info, as well. Your compost/pine bark (I would use the smallest size)combo sounds good. Do you already have a supply of compost? I would also google and youtube "compost tea" as this is a way to get those same good elements from compost into your soil without having to have so much compost. This is also a good time to start making your plans for gathering leaves next fall to chop or shread and spread as mulch on the ground. If people in your area are beginning to clean out their beds and start putting old leaves/mulch etc out on the curb, GRAB IT and spread that over your beds. Jan there is a post further down this page with lots of info on it. Actually there have been a few over the past months do a search Just type in Mulchers down the bottom in Search and three posts will come up But they all more or less say the same ...Cheers...MM.

Has anyone tried the electric Greenfields Piecemaker? I believe it's slightly smaller and handles smaller branches (1in to 1.5in diameter, as opposed to about 2in on the petrol-powered model), but I hate petrol-powered appliances and the trade-off in power might be worth it for me (I already have an electric mower and long extension lead). Would it be any less reliable than the petrol-powered ones? Or require more maintenance? Or have some other drawback I haven't considered?

g'day cestrum,

from what i have seen people who have electric shredders say it would appear that as it has always been they sort of come into the toy department made for doing very light work, for me and what i saw when we sold them they aren't my cup of tea but then they may just suit some applications?
