Spikey is back and those Birds having Fun !!

The Water dragon Spikey is back but looking at the pic I don't think it is Spikey as it had white shapes on its back, this one hasn't or do they fade with age ???? anyone know----------------------------------------------- I have opened up my Photobucket Album as I cannot get the pics of Spikey to 60k as it is very colour intensive. There are also some more pics of those Lorikeets having fun in the water. I think there are six new pics.. Cheers...MM.

Yeah!!!! Theo, welcome home and I've missed you. Me, not at the party? LOL. I'm like a bad penny. Jo, that is sort of what happened at my house. It seems like the things I share with my hubby, or teach him at, he usually excels in and surpasses me. He did that with embroidery first. I taught him how to do counted cross stitch and it turned into a decade long hobby with work more intricate than I'd ever dream of touching. Likewise the bird watching. He is very astute at noticing those minute markings one usually overlooks when describing common-looking species like sparrows. Because of this diligence, we have been able to document and photograph some rare sightings when ten years ago, alls we would have known was they were sparrows. We do counts daily and keep logs on them. I do the transcribing, but he does the bones of the work, keeps the feeders filled, and like your husband is very specific about what goes in them. It is correct the suet preference can change because the species change who prefer suet and some lean toward nuts and some toward fruit and it's a time and season sensitive thing.

Hi all, I'm just loving these posts, they really lift the spirits on these very dull days. We're still dealing with the fog up here, I've never known it to hang around for so long. Seriously now, I have another plant that I just had to have and I need some help on how to grow it. A few years ago I bought a rooted cutting of a shrub named Dichroa febrifuga at the U.B.C. plant sale. It 's evergreen, has lovely blue flowers,then berries, it growth, in opinion is like a hydrangea. I believe it comes from Asia. It doesn't winter well for me outside so I've dug it up, planted it a container and it's wintering in the greenhouse. I'm guessing it's marginal here in Z7/8. Any ideas out there? A......

Spikey is beautiful, no doubt keeping down the garden pests. We have a couple round the place have to keep rescuing them and taking them out to the front garden as I'm afraid the dog would kill them (wretched thing she is in that respect). Love that gerbera colour! Your mystery is actually a weed, sorry. Or it is if anywhere near bushland, Ochna serrulata or "Mickey Mouse Plant". Possibly OK to grow as a house-plant in a sunny spot if you dispose of the seed but outdoors the birds will spread them.

I've heard it said by some of the more extreme composters, "If it was once alive, you can compost it." Boot leather, genuine rubber, cotton or wool clothing, dairy, horns, clam shells, surplus 4x4 boards, whole deer carcasses, anything. Mostly people avoid heavily processed and tough things like leather and rubber because they take a long time to break down, and meat and dairy type things because they can stink, and they attract decomposers that are not welcome nearby (such as rats and raccoons, which eat and poop just as well as worms do). I think if you have a long enough time scale to wait, you can thoroughly bury smelly stuff under odor-absorbing carbon-rich material, and you're willing to deal with anything and everything that turns up to help, your composting system can probably evolve to handle anything once-living that you throw at it. A very large, hot (moist, well-ventilated, nitrogen-rich) pile located far away from high traffic areas (home and any frequently used garden paths), and left at least partially intact to culture and shelter a wide variety of decomposers, seems most likely to succeed. The heat might be too much for some of your local decomposers, but huge piles that aren't uniform tend to have hot spots and cool spots, so residents can take refuge wherever in the pile suits them.

MM, I had another look at the lizard and I can see the marks on his back are still there but look a little darker. It may just be the light or perhaps they do change with age......Cheers, Dee.

Dee I bought up page 9 pic No 161 and 162 there are two pics there of Spikey you can see the white, but I think it is the same one just click on the pic for the bigger one to come up, in the close up of No 161 it has that same cheeky look as in pic No 2 up top dont you think and you could be right maybe its colour fades with age. Great photos of Spikey but he is actually a bearded dragon not water dragon. Not a lot of difference and both cute in a lizard sort of way. You would probably be surprised how many lizards you have hanging around. This one may be Spikette - Spikey's mate ;)

Thanks for that GH. Sorry I don't know why I wrote Water Dragon as I have Bearded Dragon on the pic as you told me that before silly me. Yes you could be right I probably have a few more as last year there was a pregnant one stuck between the palings of the boundry fence so hubby had to take it off to free the poor thing, and a few months down the track I found I think it was six little ones about 20cms long in different parts of the garden in the one day. So maybe a couple of those call this backyard home, I hope so.................Cheers..MM.

MM, I did a bit of Googling around and found out that the juvenile dragon lizards markings are more obvious...so it is an age thing! Lizards also can vary their colouring a bit depending on habitat, mating, territorial disputes and such. Also lizards shed their skin much like a snake does, except it flakes off, rather than coming off in one piece. This can also make a difference to the colour....So there is your lesson for the day! Is that right Dee........ Gee I was hoping that maybe I had a male and female and that they would make beautiful music together and I would have lots more running around the block next year. Unfortunately, our little terrier has claimed all of our backyard (the front when she's there) has her property which means we don't get any lizards or anything that can't move faster than she can!
