Bulb Express

Before I send Bulb Express all of my money for their fantastic-looking bulbs, does anyone have any good/bad experiences with them? I am sooooo wanting to blow the budget but if I end up with crud, my DH will not appreciate it. I would like to hear anyone's opinion on their plants, etc. Thanks very much

I have bought quite a lot from them. Before you buy, do some research on what, and perhaps what variety, grows in your area and on the different pretreatments, lifting for the next year, etc. Some bulbs almost need to be treated as annuals here in the west. I now tend to pot them and if I get a second flowering in the ground that's a bonus. I see they have trays for bulbs needing lifting and I could use them.

I pre-ordered some Spring flowering bulbs last year which have just been delivered this week from Bulb Express. I have ordered from them in the past and have been very happy with them. I've never ordered bulbs from anyone else so can't compare, but I had a lovely show last year, particularly with the anemones and ranunculas.

Cook the garlic when you are cooking something else...3 heads of roasted garlic is a lot for one meal....and I suspect the energy use would be considerable for just roasting a little garlic. Do it when you are roasting meat of veggies and save it for another day....unless you have unlimited storage and can afford an appliance that will be used perhaps twice a month?? Or less often??? You can also roast garlic on a heavy dutch oven on top of the stove.....and you can use the Dutch oven for soups and stews. Linda c

I have both Stella D'oro and Stella Bella (which I don't think is a registered variety?) and love them both. They increase quickly, bloom prolifically, and make great hedgeing plants. My 2 year old Stella Bella plant when divided gave me 20 plants in total, all as good as you get in a pot at the nurseries, for 8.95. So for my 2 year investment of $6.95 X 2 = roughly $14 stick it in the ground and do nothing then get 20 plants from it valued at 8.95 = a bit less than $180 worth. Thats a fairly good rate of interest methinks! It is certainly not invasive (here), and as Dee says, very cute. Dee - there is no such thing as a "run-of-the-mill" daylily :-) They come in quite a range of sizes, heights, flower colour, pattern, size and shape. Worth filling your garden, or at least filling in the gaps that don't have irises and roses :-) As far as not registering plants that are similar to ones already on the market, there is much more to be considered than flower. One of the above is dormant and the other not. The 2 flowers are fairly different in colour, and the leaf form is slightly different. I would happily house another 6 or so similar, but subtly different variations of the same in my garden.

Haha - Saintin - the answer is "grow Up" and I mean that in the nicest way possible. Wait a little while and you will be free to make your own choices. My home grown tomatoes haven't seen the fridge at all, and we have had heaps of luscious fruit. The last 4 buckets full are ripening slowly in the laundry. If your parents are not reasoning, logical creatures, then nothing will change them. I have been trying to make my mum understand me for 53 years - it really isn't worth the angst. As a child, I knew I was different in the way I thought about things, and my mother always called me the "black sheep' of the family. Funny thing is - I always thought that was meant to be a compliment :-) I could never see any problem with following my own mind, although I heard the expression "If I said it was black you would say it was white" so many times that I did eventually develop the stubborn habit of never agreeing with my mother on principle :-)

Effects of Acidic Soil near bulbs ?

I doubt there is much of a concern. All spring flowering bulbs do perfectly well here in our naturally acidic soil and I have never known anyone locally to lime before planting. I never have. Also, you would need to add far more aluminum sulfate than is required to "blue up " the hydrangeas to have much of an impact on lowering soil pH - the application rate to lower pH a half point is 1.5# per 20 square feet. You only need to apply a couple of tablespoons to the hydrangeas.

I've also found them to be good - got november lilies, daylilies and asiatic lilies from them and they all grew well. Oh, also got tigridia - wow, the photos of the flowers really don't do them justice, let me tell you!! From Mandy

I buy from them every year and have just had 190 bulbs delivered from them last week. They are great.

I also order from Tesslars. Both places are close to me.

Great bulbs etc ,I've ordered from them for the last 3 years now.Just make sure that the plant will be compatable as I got caught with peony roses a couple of years ago.Tesslars are good too.

Have dealt with them for years. I pre ordered by (nearly a year) bulbs that my duaghter wanted to give guests as a small wedding thankyou. They required no follow up checking and arrived on time, to the week required. Can't get much better than that.

Fantastic! Thank you everyone for all your input. I haven't used mail order before and so I was convinced it would all go horribly wrong. I shall send my money quite cheerfully now!! Thanks very much.

I am even going to get a plant replaced where the tuber suddenly rotted and I asked for advice. I had gorgeous Amaryllis from them at the half price end of season sale.

Because a lot of bulbs do well only as annuals here, and/or need lifting, I ordered 2 baskets. It's a set of 3, so I have 6 baskets to plant my bulbs in. Anemone and Ranunculus need lifting. I know now so they will be easier to find. I only ever got one year's flowering by leaving them. I'll also be able to lift the more expensive bulbs now for drying off. I think this order came in record time too.

My son is getting married 12th Febuary and I would like to try to grow some asiatic lilies to flower for that date. Can anyone tell me which one's to grow in Bunbury west aust!!Either glasshouse or open area.

A couple of orders I've put in lately have arrived exactly on time, and the recipients were more than happy with the quality of the plants.
