Last year I had so many snaps to transplant and not too much room in the greenhouse. I start them in flats under lights and then transplant them into individual containers and take them to the greenhouse about a week later. I don't open the greenhouse until the weather is fairly warm. Well as I said I had too many snaps for the greenhouse so I planted lots in my south facing flower bed by the house where it was a bit protected and a bit warmer. This was 3 weeks before my last frost day. They grew a bit slower than those in the greenhouse but they thrived and bloomed a week after the greenhouse ones. I plan on doing the same thing this year and saving my greenhouse space for tenderer annuals

If I were you, I would Tie it even more above the tear and likely it will heal itself. Tomatoes are surprisingly strong plants, and they can come back from the brink. I broke off a main stem on one of my plants accidentally this year and I freaked, this was about 4-5 weeks ago. It had the biggest fruit set of all my plants, and was about 16 inches long. Nevertheless, I put the broken end in some moist soil and after a week it was growing again. And the fruit ripened! Now, the plant is around 5 feet tall and growing vigorously.

I don't have a lot of experience with them myself, but it should root for you. I would dip it into some rooting hormone, and try rooting it in a nice light soil with not too much moisture. Maybe remove some of the lower leaves so its not trying to make roots and keep foliage alive. I'm sure you'll get some really good advice here though, from others who have more experience rooting them. It won't die overnight, what you're doing now will keep it going for a while.

Thanks, floral_uk - I do believe you have found my plant! I have looked at a number of pictures this evening, and it seems the flowers come in several shades. Mine was quite pale with a bit of mauve as I remember, (but then it has been more than 16 years since I have seen it), but not as purple-looking as some of the pix I have seen. The stems and the leaves look right, too. I have noted the names and will see if I can get a garden centre around here to order me a packet of seeds. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
