propagating olive trees from cuttings
Comments (2)I had an Italian olive tree for seven years and found it very easy to get cuttings to root. I did use rooting hormone. I just cut off short pieces of branches about 10 inches long. Always used the branch ends (terminal bud section). Striped of the leaves that would be below ground in the cup. Placed the cuttings dipped in the rooting hormone in soft potting soil. Never sprayed or covered them. Set them up behind the front brick wall on my patio during the summer months. This wall was exposed to sunlight most of the day. Kept the potting soil moist. For every five started usually had three take. I don't have the tree anymore. A few weeks ago I gave it to a friend of mine who has a hot house. I could never get it to flower even keeping it indoors under lights during the cold season. Lou NE., PA...See MoreOlive Trees: How to Cost Effectively Reduce Olives and Pollen
Comments (9)Not seeing how major pruning by a contractor every so many years into perpetuity is an economical choice. And if you have turned them into pollards or otherwise severely pruned specimens then the charm of the natural shapes has already been lost - maybe plant some more suitable kinds of trees among them, cut the olive trees out after the new set is of some size. Otherwise they should probably be trimmed frequently, maintained as formal specimens instead of getting whacked back hard at longer intervals. Every time they are forced to regrow most of the top that was present at the time they are drawing on nutrient reserves in the trunks and may be gradually becoming diminished by the repeated assaults. There is also the possibility of trunk decay developing due to the large pruning cuts being made. For planting near swimming pools you want plants with large parts that do not get sucked past filters. As you have described olive trees are probably about as bad a choice as one could come up with....See Moreolive tree cuttings
Comments (2)I had the same question mainly because I bought a dwarf Olive tree online, and I have killed it! Container olives might be harder than the ones in the ground, but space demands it for me. We were golfing and most of the olive trees on the course have sprouts at their bases. I ripped a few of them off, stuck them in a cup of water and brought them home. I dipped them in rooting hormone. They are outside now (semi shade) in potting soil covered with a plastic dome (mini greenhouse). It will be a miracle if one roots, but worth a try. I did find this link with lots of information and pictures. Very informative. Comments (14)Thanks for all the tips! I'm hoping what I got was a 'sucker' if that's the only one that will work. I think it was, since it was growing straight out from an angled join between the main stem and a leaf branch. I took my cutting on three days ago, put it in a vase for an hour or so til the leaves were all filled up with water, then stripped all but the top leaves (nipped out the flower buds) and put it deep into a pot. I've kept the pot very moist, and in a shady spot, and so far the cutting hasn't wilted badly at all. It's flopped a bit, but never completely wilted. I'm impressed at how big some of your tomatoes have grown from cuttings! I'm hoping that by taking cuttings of my best tomato plants I can spread the tomato fever among my friends without having to grow all the spare plants from seed. Cheers, Slashy...See Morelouiseathome
