Here in Tropical Minnesota (zone 4a), two repeating yellow climbers that work for me are Brownell's Golden Arctic and the Canada rose by Fleming, Roberta Bondar. RB has great HT form and good fragrance. GA opens to a very full, powder puff like bloom with good fragrance. Both are crown hardy here with just a light wood chip mulch for winter protection. Even though they freeze to the ground each winter, they have enough vigor to regrow to a respectable size. They will reach five to seven feet by fall. Regards, Charles

thanks all, I didn't even think of cl. "Lady Hillingdon" and I do want the bush form of Lady Hillingdon, but for the house would prefer a more lemony hue to go against the pale gray house. I just added "Lamarque" to my order from rogue valley, yesterday, I'm getting two "Westside Road Cream Tea" rosebushes to flank the front of the pathway to my front door, they will be side by side with "Mlle. Cecille Brunner"( the smaller c. 4' tall form) with an arbor in back of these with yellow climbing roses "Marachel NIel" and "Cecline Foreestier" and French lavender on the other side of the arbor so the view from my front door will be of lavender, yellow climbers, and "Mme. Berkeley" and "Clementina Carboinieri" off to one side, where I'm planting a mandarin orange tree for evergreen winter interest. The yellow climber I'm searching for will be on this side of the house. Originally I planned for cl. "Cramoisi Superieur" but decided I love yellow roses more than red roses. I still can't decide although I'm leaning towards "Alistair Stella Gray"which I've grown before, or "Leys Perpetual" although I swore I'd never again buy a rose that I have never seen in "person". so many beautiful roses, and finite rose real estate. The bit about there being male and female setigeras I've heard before. However, it certainly doesn't agree with what I've seen. It is possible that setigera isn't self-fertile. It is a once-bloomer, being the latest of those that bloom here. It starts in late July, and if the summer is particularly hot and dry, will stop blooming until the fall rains. It supposedly isn't an easy rose to hybridize with, but there are a collection of early 19th century American cultivars. Oh man, that is a blast from the past. I still know that rose as 'The Gift x Sweet Chariot'. I don't know why it wouldn't be a good rose for birds, but who knows where you can get it currently. In New Hampshire, it was definitely a small, mounded rose.

No worries, Joseph - and my apologies, Sheila and Vac; just to clarify - I certainly didn't mean to imply that ANY posting on an old thread was 'bad'!! I agree wholeheartedly about threads being invaluable as an information resource, with no time limit. That's always been the way on GardenWeb forums as far as I know. You used to be able to search for topics and find decades-worth of excellent advice and knowledge, on growing a particular rose for example - a fantastic resource. Not sure if we can still do this though, and my brain is too tired to think about it at the moment. It can just get a bit muddled, sometimes, I think, when people don't realise it's an old thread because they've just seen it on Houzz's more recent introduction of 'helpful' suggestions of (usually UN-) 'Related' posts and go ahead and respond to the OP, thinking it's a current question they're seeking answers to - like Lily's good example of the lady who isn't in fact still pregnant 5 years later(!) - when it really only relates to a long-ago sorted garden issue. Then more people see it and start trying to help, and we're away...! Not really a major problem, as problems go... :-) But I think maybe with all the recent blurring of the content of this specialised forum with the Modern/General Roses forum through too much indiscriminate cross-posting, it's as good a time as any to raise awareness of this other, somewhat annoying for some, muddling-up issue. I really do think keeping the forum working well and more clearly on-topic (bar the occasional mention of a more modern rose or two, and those always welcome OT posts of regular posters) will make for it being a more enjoyable and useful resource in the long-term, for all of us.
