Dead heading, and some observations..

Well I have dead headed around 3/4 of the roses that need to be done. Only another 40 or so to go. That excludes the damasks and gallicas. As I go round I get to know each of my knew roses just a little better. Some observations on the newer ones ANGELA - very cute. Not a lot of bloom yet, but it's coming
BETTY BOOP - very sassy, and masses of colour. Neat, sweet little blooms.
CENTENARY OF FEDERATION - could almost be the same rose as BB, with just as much bloom. Nice but one would have done.
PLAYBOY - more orange than the two above, and not so much boop as betty. A bit bold for my taste.
THE KARNIVAL - same style but much more subtle, smaller and very pretty.
LOVE POTION - could easily win my heart over from Angel Face. Similar but a much healthier bush.
HANZA PARK - what a pain! Lovely bloom on long lax canes all laying in the dirt on their faces. The new growth looks stronger. Too much heavy bloom is pulling the canes down. I will have to stake them with light bamboo canes.
APRIKOLA - very pretty - lots of bloom.
BLUEBERRY HILL - I liked it so nice, I bought it twice. Nice big open blooms, and it seems to dead head itself.
GERBER ENGEL - I bought 2 more of these after the first. I think I will rip out the gold bunny from the same bed and put in another. Such a lovely healthy foliage and generous with it's neat, semi double blooms. Rave, rave.
DELBARDS PARIS 200? - OK - not to be raved about as yet, but it has literally hundreds of tiny buds. It might impress me more when they open. Otherwise just a nother small pink rose.
CITROEN FRAISE - also from Delbard, and I love this one. The bright pink buds sometimes open with a completely clear white centre that darkens to pink, then the whole bloom fades. Big clusters, and so neat and pretty.
Both the above have grown into strong, healthy bushes despite the lack of roots and branches on the K-mart bought plants.
CARAMELLA - a cute creamy confection that would do better amongst the DA's. It was an extra but worth buying.
GOLDEN WINGS - I LOVE this one. Lots of big single blooms, and when the petals fall there is a gorgeous rosette of amber stamens - so pretty!
AMBER NECTAR- I bought 6 of these to fill a raised bed - not so amber as I remember at the Garden show but still very pleasing, and very generous. Small green glossy foliage - very healthy.
And my absolute favourite is NOT SEXY REXY but an unknown bright lipstick pink single rosae, with 5 wavy edged petals. Lots of bright bloom and the flowers fall so there is very little deadheading. Another extremely healthy plant. I think it might be PLAYGIRL from what I have seen on the net.
Well - most of those came from Treloars, and I am so happy with them i am trying to think where I could put another large planting of floribundas next winter. I am off to take some photos now and will post soon.

What a great post! Yes... the roses here are going beserk....like they have been on steroids lol lol... I have to go around and tidy mine up as well...too hot 36 degrees in the shade>>> Note...I am using dots to make the sentences readable... Huge excitement here re Mr Lincoln..I bought it nearly dead and it now has 3 beautiful buds/flowers on it.Hooray...its a standard and looks wonderful....I also have Hanza Park ..lovely rose but needs a bigger pot...The roses we planted in the ground for the first time (after being in containers while the soil was being done)..are doing so well...we finally got the soil right and the grass is growing as well...Its beeen so hot here in Melb I think Ill give them a big feed of Charlie Carp tonight...its these days I feel truly blessed. cheers..Michelle

How marvelous to hear that someone's roses are going well, I cannot say the same here, roses in Queensland in the summer do not go together..........Mine have almost come to a standstill except seduction which has heaps of new buds, and Charles de Gaulle has lots of small just opened ones that I cut this morning for a vase having to go and buy a another bud one yesterday as a couple or three buds in a thin short vase look so elegant---------- Sparaxis

Some roses will resent it if you just whack them off and will sulk a while before starting to regrow. Others don't care much and will continue blooming happily a long. But if they're really over grown that much I'd say just go for it and take them down to where ever you need them to be. If you're going to do that though in your zone you need to do that now! You don't want to be cutting them way back just before winter sets in. If you do it now they should still have time to give you a fall flush.

Thanks. BS was and was not on my radar (new here) . A few roses did lose quite bit of it's leaves as the season progressed last year, right before Sept/Fall time. I have not decided whether I'm going to be spraying or not. I try not to ....survival of the fittest, eh. Since you mentioned it, I guess it t would be worthwhile to spend some time pulling/ID the crossing stems and thinning it out. I would say we're talking maybe 3 sets of crossing canes. I -noticed- how dense it was and saying it needs more air... HA HA. You guys should have seen me last year. I like buying plants physically in person. I get to cherry pick the lot....ya know. With mail order roses, there was a few, I was not crazed how the budded stems were and in what direction they were in. There was more than a few where I actually had put down stakes and had twine pulling/redirecting the budded stems.

@CeresMer Zone 7a NJ The bands of Bolero when I got them were small and had a little BS. Since I had never gotten bands before they looked especially small. However when I went on to planting them in the ground I found all three to be very well rooted. The three just hung in there all last year. I guess they were dropping roots. This year they just took off. I could not be more pleased. This is one of the bands: This is the three of them in the ground last fall: This is one of them with huge fragrant flowers this spring: The shrubs are much, much, bigger now but I dont have a current picture. I think I allowed them to grow by removing 95% of the forming buds. Still there are more than enough flowers. I cant guarantee each and every purchase will be perfect but every rose I got from them is doing well. If you buy through Amazon you can return/get refund if you get a bad guy. Shipping gets less on multiples. I dont have that much experience buying roses but I think this a good purveyor. You will love Bolero, especially after a year or two!

I enjoyed my walk around your rose beds It sound really lovely and isn't is wonderful that you can remember every roses name. I know I can but I have only thirty something even less that your only 40 to go. Would you believe that I have not got one of the roses you mention, very understandable seeing there are thousands out there. I enjoyed your Post also, it felt like I was meandering through you garden...Thank You......Cheers..MM.

Well yes all my Day lilies have VB labels tied to them also, Last year I had them pushed into the base but the neigbours dogs fixed them up so this year they are tied...Strange that I seem to remember the names of all the roses I wonder why , most likely because I stand there and talk to them so of course I have to call them by their name and no I am not Senile yet....Cheers...MM.

MM, are your roses just resting. Mine up in FNQ are just starting another flush and are looking great. This is a mixture of some I took a couple of days ago. Heh..Heh..I can remember most....The purple ones: Fragrant Plum/Perfume Delight/,Shocking Blue confuse me everytime....I have to think where they were in the garden when I cut them and then sometimes I have to go out and have a look!...Labels are the way to go!!!!! cheers Michelle

Sorry Sparaxis.................Hi Judy...I must say your roses look Fab!!!!I do hope that my roses are resting, I am not having much success with any at present. I am just getting the occasional bud now which quickly gets cut off for a vase. But I will admit most have had either three or four flushes since the Spring except Seduction it just goes on and on, a wonderful rose even if it does fade to white and ends its life in a few short days. Maybe I am expecting too much after all it is their first season.....Great Pic.....Cheers..MM.

Sparaxis, It is BB, and a blight on the convenors who chose a rose bred in America to be our 'Centenary of Federation' rose. Toadyism is alive and well. As if we didn't have a rose bred in Oz that is superior to Betty Boop!!!!!!!!! The 51st. State, you betcha. Are we becoming an analgumous (sic) group of people, with no Aussie heritage?

Yeh, we are whilst so many just blindly follow anything american just cause it is american. I was so disappointed to hear Adam Brand sing Aussie Country and western in an American accent. I just turned off from then on. Cheers Judy
