So wonderful to see different kinds of tommys in the gardening sections, I was surprised to find about six different types in Bunnings so I will give these Moonshot a try, so very welcome for me as I have given up trying to grow them from seed.. I bought a punnet as the Black Russians toms I planted 5-6 weeks ago have lots of fruit on them they are about half size now and looking good.

As do the 232 spring onions that I planted from one punnet the same day I don't think I lost one, so I planted some seed of them last week, got lots of veggies going now and yesterday I planted Red odourless onion seedlings, still looking for a better keeping onion I may have to try growing seeds as they don't seem to have any of those type here in seedlings.. Also planted some Broad Beans I will give them another go just hope they don't get that terrible rust this time also planted seeds of Sugar snap peas first time for them a bit of a change from Snow peas. What are you going to do with 232 spring onions, MM?

I always grow sugar snap peas as they are so sweet, even the pods. One of my daughters calls them lollies. If you want to eat the pods make sure you pick them before they get too big so they are tender but if you want the pea just let them fill out like an ordinary pea.

We (the kids & I) planted out quite a few seedlings the other day that we started from seed a few weeks ago. We planted 3 varieties tomato, silverbeet, lettuce, cucumber, carrots (2 varieties), climbing and dwarf peas. Must get some more seeds going soon and plant a few more beans (oh no the kids say). We have had a bumper crop of snap beans, we spend ages topping and tailing then freezing beans every couple of days. Should have enough to see us through a few months.

Thanks GH...Well one guess what my most favourite veggie is the onion of course. I eat them every day Spring onions for lunch on the salad sandwich or in fried rice.. The other onions get baked with the pork or beef, fried with some things. With those spring onions I start picking them when they are smaller than shop ones, then the neighbours find out I have them growing so I give some away mind you it does not take long to eat that many say 20 a week that's only 12 weeks so I have to keep them on the go all the time.

I have never grown sugar snap peas before, I have just been down to have a look at them and I was amazed at how many were sitting on top of the soil after that deluge of 23 mm earlier but very welcome is that rain I can always plant more tomorrow..Yes I planted a lot of seeds recently and they are up now its great isn't it, and good luck with your veggie garden too and how wonderful to have willing helpers ...Cheers...MM.

I'm not sure about southeastern Pennsylvania but there are some newly introduced begonias that are fairly hardy, and some older ones are turning out to be hardier than anybody realized. Among the hardier species are B. emeiensis, B. formosana, and B. pedatifida. 'Torsa', 'Little Brother Montgomery' and 'Connee Boswell' are older hybrids that have turned out to be fairly hardy. Most of these will survive a mild winter in zone 7; a cold winter (and our last several have been quite mild!) is probably another story entirely. The key is to start with healthy, well-grown plants, get them in the ground early in the growing season, plant deeply, and mulch in the fall. As long as the rhizomes don't freeze, many will return. I would also suggest getting in touch with the Delaware Valley Branch of the American Begonia Society to meet fellow begonia growers and obtain new plants. Has any one grown hardy tree tomato before

I germinated seeds from a store bought fruit, and got a very high germination rate putting the seeds in moist potting soil. I planted them in pots, and unfortunately lost all of them except one during Huricane Katrina ( I live in the New Orleans suburbs and was forced to evacuate ). Last year I put the remaining plant in the ground, and it really took off. Right now it's about 10 feet tall and has ~7 or 10 different clusters of flowers. It made it through winter fine (just a little leaf burn), and this with a couple of nights near freezing. Late last summer shortly after it was planted I got one cluster of flowers, but no fruits. Hopefully this year I'll have better luck.

Update on my Black Krim and Cherokee Purple that I planted based on your recommendations! These seeds were planted on June 2 and they went in the ground about two weeks ago. BK on the right, CP on the left. Nice blossoms growing in on both although as of yesterday I had not seen any baby tomatoes peeking out from the flowers yet. Two extra Black Krims that came up were potted up unto 10 gallons. Doing nicely...though I attempted an experiment on them by using azomite and mycorrhizae in one pot (the right one). It's a tad behind if anything though both have about the same number of blooms forming. I have one CP left (the third seed never did come up) that's in a 1 gallon and suffering. It was the smallest so I let it be for awhile but now it's budding and having a hard time. I hope to get it into the ground later today but am messing with my planting bed and waging war or roots about as thick as my thigh. My guy bought a chainsaw LOL, so hopefully it comes out today and the CP can go in.

Not to get off-topic, but this companion planting business strikes me as pretty mysterious. These detailed lists of who is good for who and who is bad for who never give any references or point to any biochemical mechanisms. Sure, if you plant potatoes next to arugula, one of the two won't do that well, because one loves acid soil, and the other loves alkaline soil. But one isn't doing violence to the other. It sure would be interesting to know if kale changes the color of tomato foliage. Soil-less mixes don't retain water well, so it's possible that a pot thereof with a lot of kale roots in it might hold onto water somewhat better than one without, especially if the roots are matted over the drain holes. Of course, a tomato plant in a mix that retains water better might well be greener.

Not sure what 232 spring onions are, but I have spring onions in year round. Just let one or two go to seed and chuck the seeds everywhere. We use them in all sorts of things. I pull the odd one and peel it and munch on it while strolling around the patch. Mix it with a fresh bit of Jalapeno and you have a breath that will send the dog under the house. Great stuff
