Another Beautiful Climber(repeat rambler)

Paul Transon-I only got him bare root last year(thanks Lozza).He has had a few blooms whilst growing but had his first full spring flush this year.He covered himself in large glorious blooms of varying colour-some pinkish,some apricoty

and some a mixture.Wonderful perfume-I am so rapt in this rose! Definitely soulfood.

I must have lost my mind because I just ordered Crepuscule, Reve D'or, AND Climbing Crimson Glory, due for delivery in September. I have been evaluating my property and decided that I could find the space for few climbers, two of those listed above will hopefully find happiness growing up the side of my house, I am hoping to get an "invisible trellis" installed in one or maybe two places on the outside of my house for them. The remaining rose(s) will grow against an ugly chain link fence that divides mine and my neighbor's back yards. The one that goes in the back yard will probably have the most growing space, but will also have to deal with the most shade, I am thinking maybe crepuscule could go there? Out of these 3 which one do you all think will grow the largest/smallest? I know ramblers get quite large and can really devour any structure in their path, but since crepescule isn't technically a rambler, I didn't know if it would have the same massive size, or if just the shape of the plant is similar to a rambler. I have read in various places that all three of these roses can get quite large. I visit HMF often, but I still seem to have a hard time deciphering growing habits and sizes, it seems like they can vary widely based on climate and just the individual gardener because I am constantly reading conflicting statements of size of one plant as different based on what website I'm looking at. I am a little intimidated by the task I have put ahead of myself, I've never had a climber, ever, but if I never try it will never happen, so here goes nothing! I've been given a La Follette for the cemetery so there will be another one here in Northern Cal - it's also on the Santa Clara fence. It is huge, with hips that look like pears. I'm a little afraid of it! We planted our fence roses ten feet apart and some (especially Arcata Pink Globe/Moser House Shed Rose) want to spread twice as far. I plan to put La Follette at the end of the row along the fence where the cane can go 20' or more if that's what they want to do. BTW, Bill Grant says that the orginal name of this rose is simply 'Follette.' Just like it's 'Reine Victoria' not 'La Reine Victoria.' We have 18 roses on the fence bordering the north edge of the cemetery. Santa Clara University has 250 of them on half a mile of fence! Anybody who wants to study ramblers/climbers should look at them. It's an incredible display. I've been there three times and learn (and enjoy) new things each time. Anita

While it is upsetting to know that I may have roses dying in a short while, I have learned a good lesson. However, some of the unidentified roses which were purchased at Walmart are doing very well in my garden. Maybe l have gotten lucky. When I have my own place I will seek out the nurseries you have recommended. This is my mothers yard, and so I do hope the roses I planted will last. I just wanted to fill in her yard quickly since I am staying with her for a while and have the time to do so (new graduate that is job-hunting!). Here is what I gathered. I hope this is helpful. Portrait, Hybrid Tea Rose - AARS but grown in Canada Chuckles, Sub-zero Rose - Own root, product of USA Hansa, Hybrid Rugosa - Product of USA, potted in Canada (part of Pan American Nursery, Canada) ZÃÂ©phirine Drouhin, Climbing Rose - Humber Nurseries. Tag is missing. Climbing America, Climbing Rose - AARS, product of USA John Davis, Climbing Rose - Product of the USA, potted in Canada (part of Pan American Nursery, Canada) Pink Supreme, Flower Carpet - Pan American Nursery (Canada) Appleblossom, Flower Carpet - Pan American Nursery (Canada) The following are of unknown origin and type, but all purchased at Walmart in the GTA. Mini Kordana Roses, Various Unidentified, Red Climbing Rose (Blaze, Don Juan?) Unidentified, Yellow Climbing Rose (Golden Showers?) Unidentified, White Climbing Rose, sometimes soft pink (Iceberg?) My red rose, the one I believe is Blaze or possibly Don Juan is doing very well, it is pretty much to the top of my fence now, and this is its second year. My white (iceberg?) rose has been around for 3-4 years now and is doing well, although it is a bit slow to grow. The yellow was planted the same time as the red, but I have moved its location, so I think I may have hindered its growth, though it looks like it is about to bloom a good amount very shortly. All roses, identified or not, look healthy. I hope everything will be alright. Most of the roses seem to be products of the USA but have been potted or grown in Canada. Maybe they'll last? They came in large black squarish pots or long green ones with lids..

Frances, I 100% agree with you about Mel’s Heritage. Even though I have no other rambling roses to compare him to, I cannot imagine a more floriferous rose. Granted, I am in So CA , but Mel’s Heritage has been blooming since Spring for me. The Spring flush was absolutely astounding. I could hardly see the foliage for all the blooms. I wasn’t able to deadhead all those blooms, but as soon as they dropped, Mel’s Heritage started up again in earnest. Even during that brief period after the Spring flush, there were still scattered new clusters blooming. Mel’s Heritage has been blooming constantly since the Spring flush. There’s never been a time that I haven’t been able to cut some clusters to bring someone. He’s my “sure thing” nearly year round. Even this morning, I can see well over a hundred blooms on him. My Mel’s Heritage outblooms every single rose I grow, from all classes of roses. Our warm Fall days and cool nights have brought powdery mildew back to many of my roses, but not Mel’s Heritage. He’s never shown a speck of it, or any other disease. I do have to keep cutting back his stealthy, long, thin canes, or he will ramble over, under, and through everything in his path. He has become thornier with age, as well. That’s ok with me. Mel’s Heritage is my favorite rose of all. There’s really no other rose, (that I grow) that even comes close to this rose in terms of health and floriferousness. I know I’ve said it many times over past couple of years, but Mel’s Heritage is truly an amazing rose. He’s my very best performer, hands down. I’m going to climb the hill to take some pictures. Lots of buds still coming here in November! So many different shades of pink and apricot..... Lisa

Hi Marion-Given my preferences I would choose PT over DP anytime.
I fell in love with Paul out at Lozza's place where he is draped over a deck and intermingled with Mme Isaac Periere.
He was in full bloom and absolutely glorious-no two blooms the same-some pink some apricot and all with a creamy base.
He is quite big out at Lozza's Place and mine has grown amazingly well in the year he has been in.
I would definitely consider him-he is a beautiful toughie and also has the advantage over DP in that he repeats-mine was covered in early spring and is setting more buds now.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this rose!

Sandie and Lozza, Please do you have a picture of what your roses are climbing over, so that I can show Henry what is needed to be built.
I have to lodge the request early so he can ponder the problem and gather the goods. LOL

Ashmeri, don't have a picture of that deck. It extends 9' from our games room, which is 22' wide. It is about 5' high. The rose was planted near the room on one side of the deck. It has covered the deck and cascades over the edges. Being next to the rotary clothes line, it needs judicious trimming from time to time. It is very procumbent, a typical rambler, and would take a long time to grow up on itself if ever. Needs a structure to support it.

Now Lozza, you have given me an idea. We have no long balcony but I do know where I can get some disused Hills Hoists. Can just see a beautiful rose growing over one of them , should be strong enough to hold it too. Watch out for my order. Marion, for the roses not the hills hoists LOL

Lovely Sandie - that one has been on my wish list for a long time. We are putting up fencing next year, to restrict the dogs from the wetter area down the back of our block during winter. I plan to have something around 6ft high with pine poles top and bottom and heavy guage netting. It will eventually be covered with roses :-)
