Sir Walter seeding

Hi everyone,

We laid Sir Walter roll on about 12 months ago (some of you may remember my post about the back yard section yellowing) well that has rectified itself and the backyard looks fantastic.

However the lawn in the front yard has all started to seed. It gives it this really hard feel underfoot and makes the lawn look a creamy colour rather than the beautiful green of the backyard.

What could cause the lawn to seed at the front and not out the back? The front gets more sun, could that be it? Are there any tips or tricks to get it back to it's lush green state? Can we shorten the seeding period or will we be forever looking at cream seedy lawn :(

The lawn is watered by bore reticulation every other day and mowed on average once a month (front and back are treated the same) it's been about 6 months since we fertilized it.

Yes I remember your Post but cannot believe that 12 months have gone thats amazing.
I used to fertilise starting in the Spring every six weeks, well during the growing period.
I would not have done it 6mts ago, have a look on your packet it should tell you the right time to do it.
Maybe you could mow on a high cut more often to keep the seeds down, sorry I dont know why it is doing that.

According to the lawn turf supplier near us, if your Sir Walter starts to seed it indicates that it needs feeding. They recommend a slow release fertiliser and never to mow it lower than 400mm. You don't need to worry about the seeds blowing into your garden because Sir W. is a male sterile plant so the seeds are not viable.
As far as it being different to the back, that happens with lots of plants. Gardens are made of a few or many different 'mico-climates'. This is influenced by other plants (including next door), water run off, shade, wind etc. so is not unusual.

I was so happy to come across this conversation. I have been searching high and low for the Sir Wilfred Laurier rose and would give my eye teeth to get that rose again. I had that rosebush given to me as a birthday present in 1999 (it was bought at White Rose) and I had it for a few years. I re-landscaped my yard and garden in 2004 and moved the rosebush and it died. I didn't think to research how to take cuttings and start new rosebushes from them at that time. I haven't been able to get that rose out of my mind since. I look for it every season. I first ran across this conversation a couple of years ago and have been searching the garden centres for any rose that matches the description. I know I sound a little obsessed but I'm really fairly normal otherwise. :) Anyhow, all this to say... if anyone has that rosebush, would you be willing to part with some cuttings? I grew two SWRs that I got from Park Wayside. Both had RMV and declined from RMV; the decline of one was cut short by RRD. It's one of the Austins that I wish to find RMV free and totally healthy. Sadly, it's one that Austin has in his "superceded" catagory for roses that he has better replacements. But...what made SWR exceptional were 1) the peony-size blooms that happened to look like peonies and that stopped traffic in summer and fall and 2) canes that were winter hardy enough to bloom on canes exposed to -18F temps above snow in the worst winter we've had here. But nobody asked me if it should have been dropped.

zabecc, columbine needs light for germination. Do not cover seeds, just press gently into soil. Seeds that are couple of years old might loose their viability- columbine is not good stored. Otherwise it should not be a problem. Last resort to try- it germinates wonderfully with GA-3, no cold treatment needed, seedlings are normal and give you close to 100% germination. Pam, There are few deep rose pink varieties that are as good as Sir Walter and what's makes Sir Walter special among them is that opulent, sweet fragrance. May I suggest just one little thing? When taking pics of roses, avoid using flash. Built in flash distorts the colour, sometimes beyond recognition, and introduces burnt highlights and too deep shades. After taking few hundred shots of all differet flowers, in various conditions, I stopped using flash. The unique charm of a rose flower is that one coming from a play of reflected sun rays between the petals and camera flash just kills it. And a beautiful, inctricate rose petal transforms itself in a lifeless plastic. - Tom

Thanks Dee, yeah it has been a while since it's been fertilized, perhaps not 6 months, I know we used a winter green fertilizer on it some months ago, but we will get out there and do it again with a slow release :)
