A new Aussie Old Fashioned Roses magazine

Hello All,

I was in my newsagent the other day looking for my Gardening Aust mag and I came across this magazine/book which is brilliant, it has cover to cover photos and run downs of old roses available in Australia.

Old Fashioned Roses by James Young and only $9.99.

Look out Lozza!!! All these beautiful old roses I have never heard of before I will be asking you for in next years order : )

Cheers,

Brissy

I couldn't resist either - gorgeous photos - anything like that on the shelf just automatically climbs into my pile at the checkout. My front hall table is groaning under the weight of the past ones.

Best old-fashioned roses for cottage garden?

Taoseeker- I am thinking about trying a Yolande d'Aragon hybrid perpetual. Other people in the area have had good success with this rose, even with the cold winters. I'd love to try a Jacques Cartier, but I want to check at Northland Rosarium to see if it's recommended for our zone. Mariannese- Wow! You have 36 Gallicas? Do you have any pics of your garden? I'd love to see them. I would like to try a Charles de Mills, which is supposed to be pretty cold hardy and maybe a Tuscany and Apothecary rose. Isabelle- I showed my husband the picture of your grape arbor and table and chairs. I have wanted to do something similar in our back yard, maybe with my antique bricks underneath. He likes the bricks, but didn't really know what I wanted. After seeing your picture, he thinks it would be a great idea! Yea! and thanks :)

What Architecture Enhances Your Old-Fashioned Roses Best?

You and everyone else on the forum knows all about my structures and statues so I won't bore you with them too much. I do love arches and they don't have to be elaborate. Changing the elevation in a garden really makes it more satisfying and interesting. I love to create a vignette. Flora sits beneath her pergola/temple the vision of the goddess of flowers and the beds surround her in circles. It's just the way I look at things. I guess most of the statuary has a classical look that fits with what I consider a romantic garden. I would very much like to recreate that circle of arches that is in Mottisfont. We saw it this past June. There is no more room within the garden proper. We have a very ambitious plan of planting ramblers to tumble down a bank above the road to our water tank. There is a spot in that area where we could perhaps do it.

Who likes old-fashioned, once blooming flowers?

Ever since I was 10 yrs. old and my mother gave me my own patch to garden in I loved all the old fashioned perennials. Hollyhocks , Delphiniums, cup and saucer canterburybells, coralbells, you get the idea. So In every place I have lived that has been my aim. Right now I have some early clematis, coralbells, columbines, peonies, and a few roses blooming. The japanese weeping cherry, apple trees, lilacs, and few daffodils and crocus I had were out earlier. The difficulty was getting a balance for that hot August time period when most things are worn out, and the japanese beetles are after the roses that bloom then. Hydrangeas help and the echinacea, and late flowering clematis. It's like conducting a symphony, trying to get the most out of each season! roseberri

Yeah, at that price if there's even just a few interesting roses in this book (avail.in Oz) I'll probably have to go for the impulse buy too.James might have to buy a bigger wallet if all the rose lunatics on these Aussie forums are any indication of the market for such a book.Hope I can manage to spot it at our newsagent!

Which newsagent was it? I haven't seen that magazine before. Did you also know that the next issue of Gardening Australia has a feature on roses? I can't wait for mine to arrive in the mail.
