New David Austin book

Just popped in to a bookstore on my lunchbreak and found a new rose book by David Austin - The English Roses - it was only published this year. Hardcover and 300 pages. $75.00 though so bought DH a wine book as well, that way I can say I popped in to the store to get that wine book for you and while I was there.....

What a marvelous idea, Ah the things we have to do.
Plenty of interesting reading coming up at the week-end.
Or a quite night curled up with a book after a hard days work.
Sounds good to me I bet you will enjoy it whatever you do.

Hi Vee.
Can you please tell which bookstore (chain) was that? I'm looking for that new book too -- on Amazon.com it says it's gonna be printed February 2006, but that's American edition.
Btw, can you tell us more impessions about the book? Any info is highly apprecaited!

"Propagation: Rosa Damascena is propagated through one year old stem cuttings. It can also be propagated through the divisions of old plant, lateral sprouts with roots and seeds. Marlorena, anyone on this thread could you please share how Eustacia has done for you. I know we are not getting her in 2020 =(, but I can't wait to have her. I will def try Emily and Mill on the Floss, but keep thinking about Eustacia. Also I read on a Uk rose review site that The Mill on the Floss gets black spot, any comments on this? After seeing how amazingly healthy Olivia Austin is, I had great expectation for any new releases.

So.... Elizabeth looks like it IS available in the U.S. now, but it doesn't show up in search results UNLESS you specifically type in the name in the search bar on their website and then click on the suggestion that pops down underneath it. The suggestion currently says "sold out" but it is not. This is so weird. It happens to other roses on their site (like Sister Elizabeth among others) wherein even if you search for "all roses" certain ones are excluded. But if you specifically type the name of the rose in their search bar, it shows up. I've emailed about this glitch several times, but it never seems to be fixed. Anyway, order Elizabeth if you wish! :)

Best David Austin roses for containers in Zone 7/New Jersey

If you don't already grow her, I highly recommend Austin's Tamora. I'm hardly in New Jersey, but garden in zone 7, SW Idaho, hot and dry in summers. I've grown Tamora for about 16 years, and she's as good now as the early days I grew her. This Austin is meant to stay small and she does. Mine is still about 2.5X2.5 feet and grows in a near perfect shape, requiring little pruning. She is always in bloom from May-June until late October, and is excellent in our heat and never shows cold damage. Most winters, my roses show no cold damage, no matter the rose. Tamora is a parent of Evelyn and other excellent roses. She has the so called Myrrh scent, but I couldn't describe, though I like it. She came from Pickering in Canada and is grafted on multiflora rootstock. Most of my Austins are huge, but Tamora is small, never throwing out gangly canes. She would be perfect for a container on a patio, I think. I'm pretty sure Austin still sells her on their website. These photos below are from a variety of months. I bought it from a Mary Ryan's bookstore which is a Queensland only bookstore chain.

I am at work and the book is at home so I will have to rely on memory. It is quite a nice book, starts off with background information on how the roses came about, which old roses were used as parents. Has some information on growing, pruning, how to position the roses in the garden for most pleasing effect, companion planting, picking for the vase and arrangement. He doesn't really talk much about some of his older roses, they only get a small paragraph each, but he devotes a page to most of them, focusing on the more recent varieties (I suppose that is no surprise though).

I am not sure where you can purchase this in WA but I am sure a bookstore could order it in for you.

I was very recently in Melbourne at Borders in Carlton and they didn't have it. I ended up with James Young's (Australian) hardcover book on Roses at $50 which is great but I am a little sceptical about the photography colouring. It seems to me that some of them are just too intense/bright, or something - not quite realistic. I am comparing this to Peter Beale's (English) big book on roses which I keep borrowing from my local library. Photo's seem much more realistic.
