A plum tree full of yukky plums

It's strange - last year the very same plum tree was laden with super-sweet plums. This year it's laden with plums whose texture is just plain awful. Floury, no taste, spit-out-awful.

How can this happen? Our summer was very mild, but there was still enough sunshine and warmth to ripen up everything.

And what can we do with these plums? Other than feeding them to the sheep and chooks. Or composting them.

No idea Spatz. Feed 'em to the chooks. Hope it's not a harbinger of future crops!!!

What sort are they Spatz? I wonder if they'd cook up alright? Boiled up with sugar they might be OK for jam.

I'd probably dehydrate a few batches, freeze them and add some into casseroles (should go well with beef *grin*) - it would concentrate the flavour and would make the gravy of the casseroles richer, and the texture after long slow cooking should be tender and moist.

Just a thought.

Hi -- I know some of the answers to your questions. American plum self-fertile -- seems to be. I had 2 and then cut down one after it got old and started to go - the other still seems to bear well. There are other plums around the yard, plus various wild Prunus species in the neighborhood, plus various oranmental plum and sandcherries in the neighborhood as well. 2) 5 x 5 foot size. Yeah, I don't see a real problem with it. My 2 American plum seedlings grew naturally to about 7 to 8 feet max, with probably a 6 to 8 foot spread. So, with a little pruning, probably not too much of a problem. 3) Partial shade -- definitely. My surviving one is in about 2/3rds shade now, as the trees around it have gotten larger, and it seems perfectly happy as an understory type tree. It still gets pretty good light because the two trees near it are a Kentucky Coffe and a Sycamore, and both don't start to branch until very high off the ground. 4) Taste -- Well, the fruits of my plum are quite tasty when fully ripe and slightly soft. They have a bit of astringency when not fully ripe. They make wonderful plum sauce, jelly, baked tarts, etc. I've never had the Chickasaw plum, so can't comment. I did plant a beach plum last year, but it's still only a foot tall.

I'm surprised you haven't gotten any responses to your inquiry yet - purple leaf plums tend to generate almost as many comments as Bradford pears :-) If I was choosing a small tree for my front yard, a purple leaf plum - ANY purple leaf plum - would not be among my choices. Here they are ubiquitous - the first choice of developers "landscaping" new housing communities primarily because they are cheap and relatively fast growing. But like many other members of the Prunus family, they are extremely prone to disease and insect problems, tend to sucker profusely and are short lived. If you are interested in the dark foliage color, I'd consider something like Cercis canadensis 'Forest Pansy' or a Japanese maple selection like 'Bloodgood' or 'Emperor 1'.

Plum trees full of black knot

There is no saving a plum well-infected with black knot. And it is systemic to the tree so don't bother attempting to graft either.......the grafts will eventually get it as well. Most issues with black knot are vectored from wild plums in the area so very difficult to control without the removal of all the host plants. The time to spray for black knot is before you see any signs - the fungicides used are only preventatives. They can't 'cure' an existing problem.

I honestly don't know that my dad ever plucked fruit from his, but my plant app says that it's a European Plum. So I'm assuming that it's fruit bearing? My dad said that his is always growing saplings nearby and he usually mows over them, but after I told him that I wanted to get a few apple trees he dug these up for me. I didn't actually want them, but you know how it goes! LOL That's a good question on whether they can be split, and I honestly have no real idea. I guess that I need to wait until November, then dig it up and see if I can unravel one from another? I thought that I could just use a shovel to cut off sections of the root that have an individual sapling? Here are 2 pics taken just now:

hi spatz,

our plum tree goes on a 2 year cycle, one year very few fruit and yukky, and the next year people stop visiting us cos we foist some of our bumper crop on them :) this year has been amazingly fruitful. maybe your tree is having an off year?

Making anything out of those plums would be a complete waste of resources. They have no, absolutely NO taste at all. And the texture is floury.

We might take the netting off the tree to let the birds have a feast. If the birds are game enough. :)

Floury and tastless plums? Sell the tree to the supermarket chain so they can duplicate it by the thousand and sell the ruit to the ignorant masses. Are you sure you didn't get hold of one of their trees by accident?

Spatz, I dehydrated the plums I got from your tree, and they are now packed into jars, marinating in medium dry sherry with a touch of cinnamon. I'll let you know how they turn out in a few weeks' time.

Actually, they tasted pretty good just dehydrated - the texture was greatly improved and there was real plum flavour, compared to tasteless fresh fruit. If you like chewing on dried fruit I would definitely recommend dehydrating them.

Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to having sherried plums with icrecream in a few weeks from now *grin*
