Wetting agents

Just wondering about wetting agents.

I believe the idea of a wetting agent is to break down any sort of protective coating on a leaf and thereby allow the chemical to enter the plant easier. This being the case, should one use a purpose built wetting agent as sold in garden shops or is good old household washing up liquid just as good an option. If so, can anybody suggest the amount to use?

Thanks in advance.

Paul
