Asimina triloba - North American Pawpaw

Has anyone tried growing these? I have some seeds that I were sown in spring. I know that they are slow growing, but I havent witnessed any growth.

Sorry Helen, I haven't tried growing it. Have you eaten any of the fruit? If so, what's it like?

Hello Helen,
I've shifted since planting one, it didn't move much for years until mulched and I started to water it regularly.

I live in Winston-Salem, NC and among the pawpaws I have growing and fruiting so far, overleese, mango, rappahannock, and pa golden are among the earliest to ripen. Sunflower and prolific are the latest. I usually get fruit off the same tree over a 3 to 4 week period starting the 1st to middle of August. I usually get a couple fruits that ripen at the end of July but it depends on the season. Most all of the sunflowers are gone by mid September - usually. Sunflower is a noticibly later ripening variety. I have not noticed a particular variety to be the earliest - some years mango is my first ripe fruit, other years it will be overleese and in others pa golden. There is not a lot of difference here.

Shepparton, I generally agree with SWVirginiaDave's comments. (Although I suspect that his "time to fruit" estimates are on the conservative side.) While A. triloba is related to the cherimoya, the fruits are really not all that similar in taste or texture. Cherimoyas generally are juicy, and have a wonderful sugar/acid balance. American A. triloba pawpaws usually have a drier, starchier texture, comparable (at least somewhat) to bananas. They can certainly be sweet and aromatic, but (based on the ones I've tasted, anyway) lack any acidity. I've heard the predominant A. triloba fruit flavor described as "banana liqueur", and I think that this is a pretty good comparison. The fruit can contain all sorts of other flavor notes, however. I believe that they're actually one of the most chemically complex types of fruit in the world, so the various "background" flavors can go off in all sorts of different directions. (As SWVirginiaDave points out, not always good ones.) If you could graft mature scionwood to your seedlings, flowering and bearing would be accelerated. I have found that the plants are relatively easy to graft, if grafting is done just as the plants come out of dormancy in the spring.

My university is planting several pawpaw trees on campus next week, so i've been doing some research on them. I've never eaten one, but i've been reading that they contain a neurotoxin that while is potentially an amazing anti-cancer treatment.. some studies also show that it can cause Parkinson's disease. Though I'm hoping you'd have to eat alot of them to cause that. The offending chemical is actually a natural pesticide, an alkaloid.. so I'm wondering if maybe you can cook the chemical out of it somehow. Pharmaceutical companies harvest it from the bark of the tree.. but it seems it is contained everywhere in the plant. Can anyone comment on this? " if you rely on the scientific names there is never any confusion! " That's not absolutely always the case. Just one example, the Western Maidenhair fern is alternatively classified as its own separate species, Adiantum aleuticum, or as Adiantum pedatum, which also includes the Eastern variety. Similarly, Prunus salicifolia is classified under Prunus serotina in Wikipedia. Sometimes taxonomists have never gotten around to making a clear decision about whether a certain plant variety constitutes a separate subspecies. "Pawpaw" normally refers to the genus of plants Asimina, but apparently there are other types of "Pawpaws" which are completely unrelated, called such because their fruit bears a resemblance. If you think there's confusion about the Papaya, just try telling me which species the Custard Apple refers to!

Hi Neil

Did you grow it from seed or cutting? I have had the seeds planted out since September and there has been no apparent growth. I dare not dig up the seed to see!

What is the attraction of this fella? I am assuming it's supposed to be cold tolerant or something. Frozen plants of any kind always seem to me to be in a state of suspended animation due to nothing more than the cold. Not that I would really know. IÂm a greenhorn taking a stab at it.

Mercury, you need to stratify the seed to get them to grow and probably even soak them before you do that. But if you do that they germinate in about a month. Then they will grow very slow unless like most understory trees they are growing in shade for the first few years, treat them like young Cherimoyas or Avocados with shade while they are immature and they will grow ok

Where did you get the seed from Helen? I'm moving to Armidale soon and frost hardy fruit trees are all the rage up there ... brrrrrr!!!!

Nicefrog: I did stratify the seed in the fridge over winter. I kept the seed between damp paper towels in a plastic bag in the crisper. I cant remember if I soaked them, though
