Open Gardens - Rose Haven....

Hi all,

Just had a great day in Hoddles Creek (East melb) looking at Karen's Garden as advertised in OG's. What a magnificent place especially for those heritage rose enthusiasts such as myself. Got lost in there for three hours and didn't think i would make it back before dark. Well worth a visit if anyone gets a chance..:)The owner is an amazing woman and should be very proud of her achievements in such a short time - and was very helpful..Roses climbing through every structure/tree imaginable and a wide variety of trees/plants as well. Loved stepping over and around plants popping up in the paths as you walked along them. Highly recommended.

That's Karen Meeuwissen, 325 Eacott's Road, Hoddles Creek. Vic. 3139. She and husband Albert own Nerrigundalh Berries P/l., which makes her endeavours even more noteworthy. Phone is 03 5967 4231. Hope she doesn't mind me giving this info. out.

Speaking of which, Reliable Roses display garden is open weekends of 12/13th and 19/20th November, 40 George Road, Silvan, Melways 121 D10. It is a picture at the moment.

I'd love to hear the news and see the pictures too, Paula. I honestly have no idea how the day went! When you are putting on an event, and leading tours, the day goes by much too quickly. I took not a single photo, and hope that folks who did come are willing to share. I saw Daun, and Michael AT, and several of the Vintage friends, so folks certainly turned out. If Aprille was here, I didn't get to meet her. From my perspective, it was a great day, although it was quite hot. The roses loved it, and many opened obligingly throughout the day. Many people bought roses, and I think that we are set with enough money in the budget for another year's operations. Heartfelt thanks to everybody who came to help (Jeri and Clay for the great catalog, especially) and everyone who came for a lovely day. The folks who stayed overnight are planning to meet up tomorrow morning for just a little more time in the cemetery. It's hard to tear away... Anita

Ann, it would be wonderful to see you and Larry there. Not only would it be nice to spend a little more time with you, perhaps you could be of some help. Some of the roses in the garden are lacking labels or mis-IDd. I've offered to help organize getting them identified, but don't know the roses well enough to really do much. Some added expertise would be very nice. I don't know about car things in the area. It's nice that Sacramento has the Towe museum, isn't it? There are a couple more rose attractions. There is a nice rose garden in Columbus, although it's mostly moderns. Last year, I went to Peter Schneider's open garden, too - he lives in Mantua, OH, which is a little more than an hour further north. He will have his first open garden day on Sunday the 14th. I'm not doing that this year, but it's still tempting. He has quite a few Lens HMs and other unusual roses. Some were for sale, an added attraction. Anita

Sacramento Old Cemetery Historic Rose Garden - Open Garden

I went to the Sacramento Cemetery for the first time on Saturday. The tour given by Barbara was great and the roses were breathtaking. I think I need a return trip to see roses I misses. We also wandered down to the perennial gardens. Such a joy. Thanks for bringing the open garden to our attention. BettyN

I can fully recommend going to Lozza and Jean's place-I have been going there every year(more than once if I can persuade
Lozza to let me come-he never says no)and it is glorious.
Well set out hybrid tea and floribunda sections and then a riotous almost untamed section of species,climbers and OGR's.
You will fall in love with so many roses that you have never seen before in the flesh.
If you are lucky there will be some potted roses to carry off at bargain prices.
I HOPE to make it out there this year but have some heavy
stressful events happening atm.
Maybe a day out there will dissolve some of that though?
A day out not to be missed-you will treasure the memory always.

Besides Lozza and Jean's gorgeous place-Reliable roses...
there is another open day coming up in November.
It is at Nieuwesteeg's Rose Nursery at 4 Tarrawarra road
Coldstream(off Maroondah Highway 12 km's out of Lilydale).
Melways ref 276/b6.
Open 9am til 4pm sat 12th and sun 13th Nov.
This place is set out in sections-Alister Clarks,Teas,bourbons,gallicas etc etc.A lovely day out and again-potted roses at bargain prices.
It does cost you money to get in-adults $5,children $2 and pensioners $3.50 but all proceeds go to the Road Trauma Support Team.
