Thanks lozza,

I had a look at the web site. I took this pic of some little beasties on my rose but they dont look much like the thrips on that site, Wot are they?

Are they the grub of the thrip?

OK now, is this thrip? these are the little nasties I found under the petals, they dont look much like the ones in the picture from lozza.

First photo, no . Thrips don't have grubs, they have nymphs, junior wingless thrips. They go through 4 instars (metamorpheses) in the ground before becoming adult and flying around. Looks like though you have a katydid in the neighbourhood. Second post, no photo.

Sumognat You are on the right path. I live in Delray Beach. The thrips here are 11 months a year. I have discovered the hard way that if you spray chemicals for disease you will have major thrip problems. It kills the beneficial insects that eat the thrips. On the other hand if you don't spray for disease the roses are a diseased mess. So it's a pick your problems situation. I have discovered that if you go with old roses that are disease resistant you can have beautiful roses without disease or without insect damage, atleast it is mimimal. I would highly recommend the china rose, Vincent Godsiff. It stays small and blooms it's head off 12 months a year. My Don Juans, grafted on fortuniana are about the only modern roses that haven't bit the dust with disease. Best of luck.

Well, I hesitate to share this because it is un proved and purely my own idea: Ever since I began my rose garden and introduced a large number of roses I began to have a significant problem with thrips to the point of never getting bloom on some and on others deformed growth and small damaged blooms.( there are several other factors but thrips are definately part of it) anyway after doing alot of reading about it I found that an old cure was to use nicotine( Iknow I know) Anyway, I grew my own Nicotiana sylvestris and began to mulch some of the worst roses with the large leaves. The roses growing next to and mulched with it have improved to a great degree. the ones not mulched with it and having problems are still having problems. Just a thought. roseberri

Imidacloprid doesn't kill mites, but pyrethrins do. The ones still alive could be new hatches. Personally, I wouldn't have sprayed the top of the soil. I would've incorporated the pyrethrin into the water that you water with so it goes down into the soil. Believe me, I know what it's like to watch a plant you love dying before your eyes. Another possibility is to take the plant out of the pot and thoroughly spray it off, including cleaning all the potting soil off the roots. Get a magnifying glass and examine the roots to determine if there are any varmints on them, and to ascertain the damage to the roots. Then dunk the plant, roots and all, in a bucket of neem oil and pyrethrin (mixed with the appropriate amount of water of course). Swish the plant around a bit, then plant it in fresh soil and a clean pot. Place it in a location far away from where it was before. Dispose of the potting soil immediately into a plastic bag, then put it in a garbage can that's not in the house. Don't reuse the pot it was in until it's been thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.

The only thing that works for me is Orthene. Yes, it's a chemical. What I do is remove all the damaged buds and blooms and put them in a plastic bag, seal it and throw it out. Do not compost! Get rid of some of the population right away. Then I spray any unopened buds with Orthene. Most beneficials are not going to show up on unopened buds. If I have to I repeat in a few weeks. I had thrips early this year, in April and I sprayed. I just noticed them back last week so I sprayed again. This is a particularly bad year.

Hi MM,
I joined up with photobucket like you suggested and put several pictures on the site, trouble is after I had posted this message and previewed it I then went back to photobucket and moved the pictures I had posted into another album not realising that the picture needs to be in the main album all the time for GW to access it, silly me.
