Is this thrip

I read with interest the posting on digital cameras, these guys are good aren't they. I have been wanting to learn how to post a picture with my message so this morning I looked in the 'help' section and this is my first try at it.

First of all my question is, is this thrip?

Next is an observation. I have a fairly cheap Olympus digital camera which has macro but I found it very hard to focus on small things (the camera wanted to focus on things in the background), then I found that if I hold my hand or a piece of white paper directly behind the object the focus is better. Maybe good if you cant afford Antishake.

Next I'm going to learn how to put the picture in the body of the message, wish me luck.

No it is not thrip they are barely visible to the eye. Maybe it is a young cockroach ????
If you have your camera set to macro it should only take a pic of that flower or insect.
Do not get to close with your camera and try not to move too much when taking a macro shot.
Good luck with your next pic if you cannot do it email me and I will send you instructions.
As you have to have your pics on a site on the Internet before you can post them here.

Hiya Leyland-definitely not thrip-have no idea what though.
Congratulations on posting your first pic too-we expect to see many more. :)
Misty Morn-that is a stunning pic of Julia's Rose-I've never seen her shown so well.

Sylvia, oil, ANY oil, when applied when the sun is as brilliant and hot as it is right now across most of the country WILL fry the plants. I don't care what is printed about "rinse it off and it won't burn". OIL is OIL and it DOESN'T rinse off. Smear it on your hands and try rinsing it off. And, it WON'T handle Chilli Thrips. Save your time and money. Spinosad CAN help control the CT's until they become resistant to it, which WILL eventually happen if that is ALL you use against them. You CAN use Spinosad with the dogs SAFELY. Once it dries, it is safe for you AND your dogs to re enter the garden. I used it in clients' gardens with dogs for years as that is what you spray citrus with to battle Asian Citrus Leaf Miner. Figure out when you can keep the dogs out of the area and spray. Watch how long it takes for the spray to dry on the plants and lawn, then allow the dogs back in. It isn't as if you're spraying DDT or contact poisons. Spinosad is used in flea treatments, though in differing concentrations, but again, it is safe for re entry once the spray has dried. And, at least until the CT's build up resistance against it, it IS the safest thing you can use against them. Good luck!

Abstract: "Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) fruit peel (PFPAE) aqueous extract was evaluated for the possible control of common sucking pests of roses viz., aphids (Macrosiphum roseiformis Davis), thrips (Scirthothrips dorsalis Hood) and two-spotted spider mites (Tetranychus urticae Koch). Toxicity bioassays were done with both leaf dip and potted plant treatment and compared with positive control (imidacloprid and spiromesifen). Toxicity bioassays revealed that the mortality was either directly proportional to the concentration or to the exposure time of treatment. At 48 hr exposure time, the mortality at maximum (1x PFPAE) concentration was ranging from ~ 80–90%. Food choice assays indicated that rose leaves treated with PFPAE exhibited high repellent effect on spider mites, thrips and aphids, where the preference was observed to range from 66–80% on control leaves as compared to 5–13% found on the treated leaves at 180 min after exposure." @Diane Brakefield it's nice to see your posts here. I always love your AL photos. We're going into the third year of a drought here, too. We just installed an automatic watering system so that we can be more water efficient than hand watering. I'm worried about fire season, and honestly, the future for all of us out west. PDX, thrips were worse for me last year than ever before. Our spring was drier and sunnier than normal and I'm wondering if that encouraged the thrips. I live very close to farmland and open pasture so I'll always get them traveling to my garden. Fingers crossed that the minute pirate bugs jump into action on time again this year. I had a couple of weeks of damage last year before I started noticing the minute pirate bugs.

IMPE, insect pests sometimes seem to gang up on spent plants - along with diseases and fungus. I've had bad problems with chili thrips on my peppers, so much so that I stopped trying to grow any. I think I'd pull and discard the infested plants, then maybe treat the area with something non-toxic like soap or DE.

As it is the only bud I managed to get that has not been eaten by any insects.

Oh great Misty, another rose to add to my buy and try list, just what I needed.Are you happy with Julias performance there.We share the same climate and I've been eyeing her off for a while now anyway....I'm a coffee/chocolate fan.....ie both types.
Looking forward to a successful posting of your giant rose mosquito Leyland.I'm a technophobic too so don't worry.Misty and Marion are good teachers.Thanks again guys.

Hi thrip,
Heres the picture of the giant rose mossie. But as someone suggested it may be a katydid (grasshopper family) if you look closely you can see the two long back legs.

Yeah, and they are very passive. Just reach forward with the Felcos and snip them around the waist. They don't seem to mind a bit. No need to cut completely in half, just snip and drop. As an aside, yours is a junior, adults are larger, and plumper. If you ever see a bloom looking like yours, look around amongst the foliage and you'll find the culprit awaiting his fate.
