1884: The past looking forward

Hello again to everybody on the forum.

Thought I would keep up the stream of tomato piccies to stimulate our tomato taste buds.

This is 1884. It was discovered in the same year as a chance seedling if my memory recalls. Fruit is as illustrated. Flavour is slightly sweet, distinctly complex with a lingering pleasant after taste.

Goes very well on freshly-baked white bread!

Looks good Craig. I'm jealous that you still have tomatoes rolling in. I'm planning next season and it's not even autumn yet! HOw sad is that? Don't answer that!

Well, Ray, tomato harvesting reports from Sydney started coming in when my plants had just started to grow. NOW is the time when we can repay this kindness. :)
Anyway, don't forget to plan your autumn sowing. Nothing wrong with that.

I wonder if the reason grandmas had such luck with houseplants is they didn't have central heating and most had sun porches. I'd really like a sun porch! For your peace lily, try putting it in the bathroom or right next to the kitchen sink so it gets a lot of humidity. It also needs a lot of light, granted, it'll live in little, it prefers a lot. You could also try a pebble tray. I used to grow mine on a pebble tray on top of my fish tank light. I also rooted a lot of hard to root plants up there. Maybe a heat mat with the tray on top of it would work, hmmm I need to go out and get a heat mat.

What a ridiculous comment. Medical professionals have been aghast at many of the things she's tried to do. Including trying to dismantle Medicaid. I wonder if you yourself or people you know have ever had to rely upon Medicaid? What happens if it's not available for people who need it? She made the news awhile back when she requested an outrageous amount of reimbursement from the government for stolen property. Here's a quick summary from Wikipedia. : "On August 20, 2018, Verma filed a claim requesting that taxpayers reimburse her for jewelry that was allegedly stolen on a work-related trip to San Francisco. Although she requested $47,000, including a $325 claim for moisturizer and a $5,900 Ivanka Trump-brand pendant, she ultimately received $2,852.40 in reimbursement." It's reminiscent of several of the long departed Trump appointees who were drummed out of office in shame because of trying to benefit personally from misuse of government funds. Anyone can contribute to Wikipedia, no matter what their persuasion. If you think this description is inaccurate or colored in some way, feel free to change it.

Altho not fond of winter here, I plan on doing all those little projects that never appear to be completed. We are planning on close to some heavy snow storms, accumulating close to 6 plus feet, through out the winter. I am hoping to find a fix for this crippling Rheumatoid, and to be able to tackle my snow shoes once again and have some shoeing time on a bright sunny day. The basement, especially "his" side needs a really good sorting out. My antique kitchen tool collection needs a good cleaning and sorting....might part with some of them, might just move them all around. Clothing in closets, rubbermaids and drawers, needs to be sorted, repaired, given away, whatever. My crafting project box needs a really good sorting out...what WILL be done, what will never be done, that sort of stuff. And, if I accomplish and or all of that, then I'll watch a new program or read something interesting!

My dad’s place has had very strict protocols. I am allowed to drive him to appointments (which are rare, but he has had a couple). He rides in the back seat and we are both masked. He doesn’t need extra assistance getting out of the car. He lives 2 miles away so we are in the car for less than 10 minutes. Neko, it’s terrible, isn’t it? We moved my dad in March 2 hours from his home to be closer to us, and then we didn’t see him again until July. Only recently have they allowed the residents to leave for anything other than essential dr visits. Even so, he’s only been to our house once (outside). We are allowed to visit him, but it has to be scheduled in advance, two visitors max, no more than an hour, etc. Fortunately he has settled in and has some buddies there and they’ve started more and more activities — though all are 6’ apart, masked, etc., which has to be challenging with the elderly!

Craig, I can't see your pic either. It's really weird, because the other day I saw all your pics (Golden Monarch group) and so I just checked if I could still view them, but no. I'm getting a request for a password for them too.

Is there a setting you can change to allow public viewing?

I told you this was a steep learning curve! Bright spark that I am, thought password protecting the web site would enable others to view it without making changes. Wrong!

Thanks Craig. It looks like a nice textured tomato, fleshy with small seed locules dotted about.

I have a couple 1884 waiting to ripen on the bush (which is now rather defoliated - various diseases have set in here, but I'm hoping the fruit will ripen OK)and they look nice. Earlier fruits were rather small with severe radial cracking, but the later fruits are blemish free, thankfully. Can't wait to try one sliced onto toast!

Yum, Craig.

I have one Kellog's Breakfast to slice today. It looks incredibly pretty. Just waiting for the bread to rise so that I can bake it for lunch.

I'll be interested to hear what you think of the KB, Spatz. I thought it a delicious tommy with an almost capsicum-y edge to the taste.

finbar, KB is delicious! It's a real winner. Definitely coming back next year. Might just have to put another bag or two on some of its flower buds for (more) seed saving. :)

The texture is great, the colour is a very attractive rich, dark yellow, the taste is really nice. Must go and have another slice to be able to better describe it.

Well, I'm back. Too full to move. Fresh sourdough bread and slices of Kellog's Breakfast. Here's a more refined description: it's very very very nice. :)
It's stuff-your-face-with-KB nice.

Thanks, finbar. I've got enough for next season. But not enough to share around at the moment. So I'll refer everybody to you for KB seeds if I don't get bagged fruit for seed saving.

Graeme, please may I have a few KB seeds? Mine turned out to be wrong again, and the fruits I got weren't nice so I'd love to try yours next year. Maybe third time lucky?!
