Hows everyone doing? I am so looking forward

to spring! After all the snow, and ice, I can't wait to get some blooming flowers around, in and out.

One thing I am having trouble with are my peace lilies. I am going to go back and read some past posts, on these devil plants.

The leaves are turning brown, and darn I thought I was doing everything right. The heat in the house sure ain't helping either during those darn cold spells. The plant looks HALF good. LOL! Half dead. Sigh!

Hey good reading all of you. I am so HAPPY this winter is over with, I am jumping up and down for the sun, robins, blooming flowers, etc.. With all that said, the darn heat will be off, and my plants will enjoy their days.

Darn houses, we need to find an engineer who cares about plants when they do their blueprints on heat vents. NOT ON THE FLOOR BY THE WINDOWS! My plants like to be near the windows! LOL

I wonder if the reason grandmas had such luck with houseplants is they didn't have central heating and most had sun porches. I'd really like a sun porch!

For your peace lily, try putting it in the bathroom or right next to the kitchen sink so it gets a lot of humidity. It also needs a lot of light, granted, it'll live in little, it prefers a lot. You could also try a pebble tray. I used to grow mine on a pebble tray on top of my fish tank light. I also rooted a lot of hard to root plants up there. Maybe a heat mat with the tray on top of it would work, hmmm I need to go out and get a heat mat.

I couldnt agree more with your comment about vent placement. Im my apt., all the vents are place over the windows. Ive even covered some with foil because closing them still caused a draft to my plants.

I was looking for this modified pic I posted last night. I was wondering where it went. LOL. I posted it here. I emailed the moderator to delete it because I posted it on a wrong thread. For the photoshop, I used the Rubber Stamp tool and pasted the image being copied on a separate layer. Then cleaned it up with Eraser tool, then finally cleaned it up with Magic wand with low Tolerance value. When it was finally clean, I just applied drop shadow with value of 10 for blur. schoolhouse - sorry about your butterfly bushes. I'd been thinking about whacking mine back but held off wondering if we'd get a freeze. Now I'm glad I waited. The daffs are laying on the ground but they'd been blooming for several days before the frost hit. I covered my hydrangeas that had sent out new growth--used sheer curtains held on with clothespins. Anywhere the wind blew the curtains off, the leaves are turning black so we definitely got a hard freeze. I covered my hosta and cushion spurge with folded sheers held down with rocks and put a couple of light-colored 3-gallon pots over the new growth on my E. Pow Wow Wild Berry plants. Those appear to be fine. The tall phlox also seems to have weathered the cold. The wind blew two of my winter sown milk jugs off their tables so at least one of them is toast. The campanula had sprouts in it so I'm hoping those weather the storm (pun intended). sweetannie4u - I'm with you on that hate thing.

I just got two of them this spring--they bloomed very nicely and then, low and behold, despite this absolutely miserable weather and minimal care on my part, they have re-budded and are blooming AGAIN!?! I was so tickled I went out and got two more and planted them this weekend. I'm thinking I may have 'lucked' out and found the perfect spot for them...They get sun in the morning and are in shade until the late afternoon. I'm impressed...now if they just make it through the winter I'll be over the moon!

Hi, Everyone! Glad to hear everyone is doing well... Just as an fyi, here's how my normal day goes... I'm now working in downtown Washington, DC, at a State Department facility. I get up at 4:30, I'm out of the house by no later than 5:30, and I drop Mason off at friends' for doggy day care. I catch the metro, and I'm at the office by 6:30. Most days I stay until 4 p.m. when I can catch the shuttle back to the metro, but yesterday I wasn't feeling so hot so I walked the half mile to the metro. It was a beautiful day. Then it's back to my friends' house, pick up Mason, and drive the last 10 miles home, which at rush hour can be an amazing chore. Normally I'm back home sometime between 5:30 and 6. It makes for a really long day as compared to my old job where it was literally a 3 mile commute. The biggest thing that has suffered has been my cooking. I get home in the evening and most nights I do something very simple -- a burger, a sandwich, etc. Last night I did do a pork roast, though, and that was good, but I really miss doing the cooking I used to. The ONLY thing that has made this job possible is my friends. Their sitting Mason for me (they were actually his former owners before he came to live with me) allows him to socialize with their dogs, and I don't have to worry about him being alone for 12 to 14 hours a day. If they weren't doing this, this job wouldn't be possible. Anyway, that's what's going on in my world.

Pistilo,

If your local tap water is on the hard side that may be part of the problem you are having with the peace lilies. Allowing the soil to dry out too much will also cause leaf browning.

Peace lilies can do fine in low humidity as long as they are watered properly.

Protect them from direct sunlight.

I am new here, but I wanted to put my two cents in about air vent placement. I have a couple big windows that would be perfect for many of my house plants if it were'nt for the vents. They are right under the windows and they dry everything to death. It is very frustrating to have big windows and not to be able to put my plants in them!

Vic,

Plants often benefit from good air circulation as long as the air is not too hold or cold. The circulating air may have a drying effect but that can be compensated for by watering the soil a bit more frequently.
