Hi,

The first picture looks like a mildew of some sort, any ideas please.

The second picture looks like maybe some fertiliser burn, any ideas please.

Crikey, I was only kidding about dumping the acid in your backyard.
Na just kiddin, but they do both look like chemical burns Leyland.The second one could pass for necrosis(severe deficiency symptoms etc.)but since it has occurred at the same time as the first I'd guess not. Foliar fertilising/insecticiding/fungiciding on a hot day?...rates too high?....or both even?

Hi thrip, thanks for the comments, I think maybe your right because I Put some iron chelate on early one morning last week and the day turned out to be quite a warm one so that must be it. I will keep a close watch and make sure it doesn't get any worse.

I checked that post, but my cutting is not that brown or wrinkled. It is still quite hard and when I cut it, the tissue was green and there was lots of sap. I let it callous for a week before planting. I'm just unsure about the black areas on the stem because they seem to only be on the surface. But like you said, it could still be rot. I just don't know how to tell whether it's rot or not. Also, the black area isn't soft.

Old Forester... that's what I was wondering. My dog poops all over that yard and I've never seen maggots in it. On the other hand, if they were guts, how come I didn't them before? We're always out and about in the yard and my whole property is only 1/3 acre. A couple weeks ago, a groundhog in my garden was acting weird. My dog ran at him, but the critter only ran a little ways and then sat down, panting. My dog is mostly blind and fairly deaf, so he ran on by without seeing him. Then the groundhog ran out of the yard in bursts, sitting and panting between each burst. Wonder if that had anything to do with it?

I have had dodder weed on some perennials a few years back. Terrible to get rid off. I didn’t know we have dodder weed that is affecting trees here in the Southeast. If I remember correctly (it’s been a while since I read up on it), the Japanese one was in California.

@cat_ky, @User, @kudzu9: Yes we found the leaking source on the roof and had fixed it. However, for the existing water damage in the garage, just want to see if there's any cosmetic things that we can do to make the garage looks nicer (e.g. ways to remove the white mineral residue and black stuff). Yes there were moisture showing up when it's pouring rain, but we believe that we had fixed the leaking source on the roof. @Linda Dornan: it may be, but we had caulked that area so it "shouldn't" be leaking from there anymore... Note that this is a window that's in the garage and the previous owner decided to seal the window with the black security screen thingy so the window no longer can be opened, etc. The house is located in San Francisco so there is no snow here (and it doesn't rain often here in SF until recently). OMG. What about forgetting poison formulae and return to basics. Loads of horse manure and adequate water. If you're using that a bore, it should have been tested for water quality when it was sunk. Certainly don't need to be watering alkalinity in heavy doses. Here is a suggestion.

Wow Lozza. Thoses pictures are interesting to say the least.What was alkaline in Beijing though ie. the soil or the irrigation water or both? How does alkaline chook poo remedy the problem ?

Well, the water in Beijing is the best quality I've ever tasted, better than Melbourne. No trace of contamination that I can detect. And I know Adelaide water! Chook poo I believe has very little lime content, the major benefit being a considerable nitrogenous content, which I have found very beneficial for roses over the years, in our 6-6.5 pH soil. Probably the best balanced fertiliser, and readily available in quantity.

But I think you're having me on aren't you, after the chemical mumbo-jumbo that I've tried to comprehend recently. Like Brenton says, KISS. Not you of course!! The highly chloritic condition of the garden we're talking about, demands going back to taws surely.

For what it's worth, for the past 30 years in preparing my ground for planting, I've used Pivot 521 and calcium hydroxide in roughly equal amounts, following up with Hi K foliar feed, and a side dressing after a year of 521. Works for me.
