Need new fragrant rose to replace The Prince

My potted 2-year-old The Prince suddenly wilted and died last week. Its flowers always smelled great when it felt like producing them, but I must admit I wasn't too sad (though I was mystified) when the whole thing just died. I want to replace it with an easier-care, more prolific and at least as fragrant new crimson rose. On the American forum people rave about Crimson Glory. Has anyone here got anything good to say about it? The other day in Flower Power, I got a good whiff of Oklahoma and couldn't believe how great it smelled, but I don't know if it would do well in a pot. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions?

If it's red and fragrant you like rross then I'm sure there's some great choices.Just a few that I have been trying this year are Francis Dubreuil and a cross from it called St.Francis Xavier(FD x General Gallieni). Both have strong perfume and are similar in many respects. FD is a short growing tea rose and so far St.FX is similar but appears to have a more double bloom.Myrna Courage is another we're trying and seems to be like a more compact version of your tall red HTs'(eg Oklahoma,Mr Lincoln).
It's fragrance is strong also much like Mr Lincoln.

If you would like another DA rose than you can't go past 'New William Shakespeare'. Each time I've bought this rose it's grown from a little twig of a thing into a large bush within six months. Its flowers are a bit lighter in colour than 'The Prince' but just as large and, there are much more of them. It has a lovely spreading habit which looks wonderful in a large pot. I've grown DA roses for over 20 years and, as much as I liked 'The Prince' it just didn't perform. NWS is a much better plant.

hihi i planted viking queen on my south facing wall alongside clematis will goodwin and daphnes species anemones and peonies in 2005.....i saw VQ very widely recommended but i havent been too happy....i really wanted something fragrant in this very tiny front garden and despite its billing as fragrant i havent found it to be noticeably so....also the blooms in spring are a very blowsy and tend to flop forward and look down rather than out...and the colour is a rather dull uniform pink....in the fall the blooms tend to have a stronger tea shape and crisper colour....but all in all not the character plant i looked for.... so now i am up for suggestions>>> the wall is white and garden now contains blues lavenders whites and pinks .want a good repeater...and some real fragrance...excellent sheltered site....there is a good wire trellis support on the wall....soil is supporti daphnes and clematis equally well....the spot is dry and sunny but air circulation is not the very best due to density of plantings and iron trellis work some undr consideration climbing cecile brunner zehirine drouhin gloire de dijon ilse krohn white cap mme isaac pereire mme alfred carriere cl. ophelia any and all opinions adn suggestions very welcome thank you

Gartenprinzessin Marie-Jose, the new Kordes rose, is a hot pink, fragrant floribunda. It was released in Europe last year, and looks very promising. It probably will be marketed under a different name in the USA, which name I do not know. If literally translated from German into English it would be 'Garden Princess.' The blooms are smallish, a little over 2" (probably larger here in the USA), and very cupped-globular (I see balling-up looming on the horizon in my humid, wet climate). The petal count is about 20 so this may be an asset in preventing balling-up. Flowers are presented in tight clusters because each bloom has a very short neck, much like Summer Romance's blooms are presented. I do not like this trait. I hope it has a more restrained, uniform bush form unlike the monstrous growth habit of Summer Romance. I do not know if it has been awarded the ADR designation. It would be a great plus if it has this asset.

I'm a bit late to Darren's party here but just to say that your arch at 2 foot wide is very narrow. Is there a path to walk under? it will be quite a squeeze if so, or perhaps there is no path? Either way, that width won't make it a very sturdy arch, generally you would want one about 4 foot width and cemented in, bearing in mind our windy climate, especially where you are with, what regular 60 mph gusts in the N.W.? I'm in East Anglia and it gets bad enough here. With that in mind, I would have gone for a smaller climbing rose, and thornfree if you intend to walk near it. 'Zephirine Drouhin' is much recommended but it does black spot and mildew in damp climates and grows quite large, I would suggest it needs a bigger sturdier arch if it's not to pull it down in a gale. You might not like my choice here of 'Wild Rover', as it wouldn't be as sumptuous as some of the older fashioned roses and Austin's, but it's virtually thornless and has a strong scent of spicy cloves, it even wafts a bit, and the foliage is large and glossy. It's a climbing Floribunda and blooms all season. It suits my makeshift wooden arch and is just the right size. If I were you I would plant one rose one side of the arch and a clematis of your choice on the other, I feel 2 roses would be overpowering. I like a clematis called 'The Vagabond' it's dark blue but quite striking, but so many to choose from as you know. A pruning group 2 type clematis only. 1 and 3's would not be suitable. 'Wild Rover' in June... it's normally purple but turns reddish in warmer weather. ..in my [crowded] landscape... I also have a narrow path but the arch is wide enough. Hope it gives you some ideas, if not for now, then later on. Best of luck with your choices...

Wow... I missed the photo copyright piracy issue last year. Ironically, I was just contemplating posting a comment to another pertaining to their stated intention to propagate a patented cultivar -- just a gentle reminder about intellectual property... It feels like Suntory (or whomever) might have ceded a bit of moral high ground on that one. I would however consider that possibility that Houzz claims intellectual rights to any and all images (and text) posted on this forum. (Have any of you read the full end user disclosure? I know I have not.) Houzz obviously purchased the Garden Forum with the intention of monetizing it. The funding, hosting, and maintaining of websites isn't free, unfortunately, and I have wondered what value Houzz gets from this forum. I would not be surprised to learn that houzz owns own everything posted here as their own intellectual property. It's not entirely inconceivable they could have sold the (mislabeled) image. I have Celestial Night, and to my surprise, it is doing failry well here in this Central Texas garden where so many of my roses fry. I might have to give in and try her half-sister Twilight Zone... I had actually acquired Purple Lodge a few years ago (sold as Angel Face by a grower who probably didn't acquire the rights to sell PL) but it unfortunately did not survive its first summer.

Once you smell Ekstase (fragrant red) you will be sold,and it is longlasting in the vase.

Thanks everyone. I've been promised a cutting of Francis Dubreuil, so that's already an option. Now I just have to locate the actual flowers you have all suggested to get a whiff to see if they work on my nose. When I was visiting the Rumsey Rose Garden at Paramatta Park, I just couldn't detect any fragrance a lot of the roses I'd heard about as being strongly fragrant.

I have The Squire, which is very vigorous with growth and flowers extraordinarily well. Othello is another, more pinkish red, which also flowers very well, but doesn't seem to grow as tall as The Squire
