First time vegetable gardener

Hi all,

I am not a very experienced gardener, but I'd like to have a go at growing some vegetables. Could anyone recommend good resource books and some easy to grow vegetables for a beginner?

Not sure of a good book but a great resource I have is the planting guide from Eden Seeds. See the attached link and go to "planting guide". I find it hard to print off but it may be our old printer.
Visit this forum regularly. There are a lot of knowledgeable people who normally let you know when to plant what, and are always willing to give advice. Pay particular notice of those in Vic and Tas for timing and cooler climate plantings.
There are good books out there and others on this forum will advise. Most of the ones I've seen are written for the northern hemisphere and not always useful for us; not just timing, but also diseases, temperature variances etc.

The Yates Garden Guide is a good book for the whole garden, and has planting times for all the climate regions. Things you could start with now or any time of the year are spring onions, lettuce, parsley.

If your soil is indeed clay, you are going to have to ammend a fair amount of organic matter to improve things. Even then, don't expect to go from clay-soil-with-sod to vegetable-garden-paradise in one season. Clay soils require alot of attention, inputs and patience. One thing going for you is water and nutrient retention. The major drawback/challenge will be drainage and soil crusting. Adding organic matter (be it compost, peat moss, leaf mold, etc.) will help. I would suggest something in the nature of 1.5"-2" the first season. Caution with the tilling. If you till clay soil too early in the spring when it is too wet, clods will form that will not break up until next season (hopefully). Do a google search for "tilling test" and wait for the right time. Don't rush things, or you WILL have problems that are not rectifiable this season.

flora_uk, there are a few reasons to till legumes in before they go to seed when using them as a green manure. This is before they start sending a lot of nitrogen into the fruit, so N in the whole plant is highest. If you harvest the seed you are taking some of the N out of the soil. Another reason is just a matter of timing. In areas like the northeast and midwest of the US, temperature swings rapidly from winter to summer extremes. Unless things are carefully timed, it can be hard to grow favas or peas to maturity, then follow them with something like tomatoes or eggplant. I'm going to try just such a feat myself, but I will be planting my favas this weekend, as long as the weather cooperates and the soil isn't too soggy.

any suggestions to train summer squash to grow vertically?

Thanks tomncath for your suggestion and picture. I like your setup for the cucumbers. I didn't think that I could grow them in pots so I planted my seeds in the ground. Are there advantages to planting in pots versus in ground? The spacing between my squash plants is about 6" apart, and the spacing between each row is probably 12" apart. Do you think a similar setup will work? Or will I need to do individual posts? I don't know how deep I can go into the ground so I don't know if individual posts will be adequate support. I probably need to add a little bit more soil and top it with mulch now that the weather is really warming up.

Problems with tomatoes, cabbage, blueberries

The tomato plant has been heavily over-watered. is starving for nutrients, and is likely root bound in that container. They don't really intend for them to live out their life in those containers but to be transplanted into the ground or a much bigger one. At this point it may not be salvageable but if you want to try it needs to have all the damaged foliage removed, be transplanted into a container at least 2x as big with fresh potting mix and then needs to be fed regularly. Container plants always need regular feedings to survive. The cabbage is fine - holes happen in leaves for all sorts of reasons. Look for tiny green caterpillars on the undersides of the leaves and squish them. Those look like young plants as they haven't begun to form a head at all. Either that or they are way too warm. It is quite late for cabbage in much of the country as it is a cool spring vegetable and doesn't tolerate summer heat. But without knowing your location or at least your garden zone I can't say for sure. Blueberries same as above - in a container they require regular feedings every 10-14 days of a well balanced fertilizer. Nutrients leach out of containers everytime you water so you have to replace them regularly. Blueberries also require very acidic soil to grow so normal potting mix doesn't do well for them and they need an acidic fertilizer as well. Hope this helps. Dave

A great book I got as a gift is Botanica's Pocket Organic Gardening For the Australian Gardener published by Random House.
Try carrots, beetroot, broadbeans, onions, leeks, lettuce and the brassicas (cabbage, bok choi, broccoli and so on). You should be able to sow most of these.
And as Pepino has said, don't hesitate to ask on this forum. Everyone's more than happy to share experiences and give good recommendations.

The eden site is pretty good. It's what I used before I found "The Tomato Brethren"here on the forum. There's heaps of info.And good pictures as well.

Silver beet, spinach, lettuce, shallots, carrots are all good easy beginner vegies. Carrots perhaps less so but if the ground is not too stony or overfertilized give them a go too. Good luck.
