Trip to Brisbane

I asked for help last year when my friend was visiting Sydney and got some great advice so here goes again.Another of my lucky travelling friends is going on a two week trip to Brisbane with a side trip to Canberra.We are very avid gardeners and she would like to take in some gardens in those areas.She will be staying by the university(?) while in Brisbane.Is it spring there now? So sad that I can't go with these women but can at least live through their photos and experiences.Thank you for any suggestions.

Yes it is Spring here now, most days are in the high 20's or low 30's we are also getting rain at last after many months of drought, its is also a bit on the humid side.

Places to see. The Roma Street Parklands, We have two Botanic gardens. There are so many things here and plenty of places for info. In the City in the Queen Street Mall there is a Info place with heaps of coloured brochures.

You dont say what University as there are many of them in the suburbs. I have not lived here long enough to know everthing yet, but plenty of our members have so they will be able to tell you more....Cheers..MM.

Hi KKM,
She could take the bus from the Uni UQ,412 into the City,Adelaide Street cross the street Catch the free City Loop to Botanic Gardens Alice Street near Parliment House.Then she could catch a 190 to New Farm Park and check out the huge rose gardens, Catch the CityCat from New Farm to Southbank Parklands and back to the City take the City Sights Tour to Roma Street Parklands they have guided tours at certain times. Take the 411 to Mount Cootha Botanic Gardens only runs Daylight hours. Don't forget to take the Croc Bus to Australia Zoo and Gardens a good day out as well.Will also need a good hat, sunsreen and water bottle at present. Good luck. Peter r

I see a few near the coast on google. I was told they were planted large fronting a nice and big Hotel. They have the "coconut juuuuust making it look" like what you see in the California desert. Interesting that those Coconuts had tall Howea palms next to them. But,yes,I would trade for the Brisbane climate. Ironic that here in the bay area we also have a city named Brisbane. Its a very cool ,mild climate..not Brisbane like in summer!

Hi Ian, My garden will *never* be up to 'Open Garden' standard :) As I often tell friends who ask me why I've planted a given palm, philodendron or cordyline in a particular spot, the garden only has to satisfy one critic - me. Talking to one of the local Open Garden judges, it became apparent that they adopt a similar system to concours car judges - start at '100 points', then start deducting points for blemishes. I'm not saying that they disregard the overall impact of the garden (or car, or ..), but I'm not sure where the system leaves bush and rainforest gardens. Don Burke makes the point in 'Indigenous' that gardeners who chose this style of garden often faced the comment that 'it's just bush - thats not a garden'. To me, the ability to recreate a passable rendition of the rainforest (albeit a mix of native and exotic species) is the highest form of gardening. g'day marion, she is quiet comfortable her problem causes more confoundment to her at present as she is still in denial so isn't prepared to look at her own situation and work out the organic causes for her stresses and strains. i wouldn't be shy to attend a university or anywhere for that matter introverted isn't one of my fortes chuckle, just where i am here it is very isolated and there is no way i can get into town to do anything. there simply isn't any help for people like myself in rural areas. that i was able to get someone to pick me up once a fortnight to do grocery shopping took a lot of doing, my main push has been trying to get e/mail pen pals or msn chatters to fill those hours. at present my mind is on bev a lot of the time, and our main aim is to sell our place so i can be closer to her, so my head is pretty full of all that for now just need to fill the many lonely hours i guess. thanks to all her for the very many suggestions. len

Ian and Judy We enjoyed ourselves also, strolling down those meandering paths with the birds in the trees and the lizards in the garden and on the rocks.The new Brom house was great and I have never seen so many broms in one place before, just Marvelous, have you even made a count of how many plants are there. Thanks for the great ideas. She will be leaving for Australia on this next sunday and is planning to visit the suggested places.
